He is 14, and will need to fly to meet me for a hunting trip. The flight is not booked yet, but his passport is expired, what ID will be needed to get him on the plane without issue?

Arrive at least 2 hours before the scheduled departure time of your child’s flight and speak with a ticket counter agent. Children traveling alone can’t check in online or at the kiosk.

You’ll need to fill out an unaccompanied minor form and any necessary Customs and Immigration documents for the day of departure. This form must remain with your child during their journey. At check-in, parents / guardians will also need to provide:

A birth certificate or passport as proof of the child’s age
The adult’s government-issued photo ID with their current address
Your phone number so we can contact you
The name, address and phone number of the adult meeting your child at their destination
Once your child is checked in, the ticket agent will give you a security pass from the airport ticket counter so you can take your child to the gate.

Plus they want another $300 for him to fly alone. I might have to change his schedule and have him fly with another adult flying on another day.

Boy how things have changed. I used to fly NY/PHL-Dallas on my own from 10-18 years old, always got fricked over by American and had to find my way home on my own . Builds some character figuring out how to handle those situations when youre young

I thought that was until age 12 or something around that.

AA and Delta, the only 2 airlines that fly into this airport, require $150 each way to supervise the kid. At age 15, we could skip this.

Holy cow..

Alaska has a fee for escorted services but it's not $300. I believe it's $50.

Just has two grandkids fly up this summer and Alaska didn't require escorted services, kids did fine. 12 and 14.
