Bout to go to CDMX again and this time we are looking to spend a few days at a cool village or something nearby (within 3 - 4 hours driving, preferably). Leaning toward San Miguel de Allende. Anyone have any advice?

Cuernavaca

Spent 2 weeks there about 15 years ago. It was cool, but honestly nothing too amazing.

I would highly recommend Taxco

Puebla is very safe and historical. It is on Airbnb's top cities in the world to visit in 2019.

I agree with this, Puebla is a great city. It's not really a small town but has some cool small towns surrounding it. Cholula is a nice town and has some cool churches.

We went to Guanojuato during Festival Internacional Cervantino and had a great time. It's a very colorful city and has a pretty cool mummy museum.

If you are only going one place, San Miguel is set apart. It's like an old European city, with high-end amenities (for Mexico anyway). I found some cool mountain-bike trails also.
