Should I purchase my Italy rail tickets in advance?
I figured it's been a few weeks since I had a thread on my trip in June.

Should I pre-purchase my rail tickets or just buy them at the gate?

We would’ve been fine not buying in advance but you might as well for sake of convenience and avoiding any potential ticketing issues at rail station, language barrier, etc.

No, you can easily buy at the station, from a machine with English language instructions. The TrenItalia machines even take US chip and signature cards with no problems (not true for France or Germany tho). I used the machine @ the FCO station about 2 weeks ago and it handled my US credit card just fine. The machine will give you a choice of languages, on screen. Note that you must know your origin station and destination station names (just the city name won’t do, you need to know which station as well).

TrenItalia has an English language website as well, if you want to plot your routes and get an idea of fares.

My experience was that it was WAY cheaper to purchase in advance. It was 29 euros for first class in advance and when I booked another ticket the day of it was like 45 euros for the lowest class.

His cheap arse won't be letting his daughter ride in a first class cabin.

I bought ahead of time and no regrets. I'd just go ahead and purchase the first class tickets too. From what I remember, it was only a $10-15 difference.

you still have to reserve a seat right? And you can't do that until 30 or so days ahead of time? So I wouldnt mess with it until you can reserve everything at once. They rarely book up unless you have to have like a first class from Rome to Florence on a peak time.

Why are you leaving the country? There are plenty of businesses in America that could use your business. Don't go overseas seeking fun like Helmet Head just because it's trendy.

I ended up buying my tickets. It was easier than I thought. I did get business class, $29 a ticket for one train, $34 for the other.

Good. One less thing to worry about when you're there.

I have my Trenitalia tickets to travel from Florence to Venice on Easter Sunday morning. If I know exactly when I will have to travel from one city to another I feel better having them in my pocket before the trip. For discretionary day trips I just buy them at the station.

If you know for sure when you want to travel by train, I would book in advance.

Jesus man. 8 threads here. A thread on the OT.

It’s a trip to Italy. How much hand holding do you need?

(Not sure why you care so much about this guy’s need to plan. He’s asking questions that are potentially helpful to others.)

Agree with the previous poster: if it’s a firm date, sure, book in advance. But regional rail isn’t so overcrowded as to need a reserved seat. I’ve never bothered with first class on regional rail in Italy, and I’ve never been forced to stand or not found place for a small suitcase/backpack. Again, think about packing light and doing laundry on the road. Trains, multiple cities, etc will make you very happy you packed light.

I purchased rail tickets online before a trip I took a few years ago. My CC info got stolen and I ended up with a $1500 purchase in Italy a few hours later so I’d just buy them at the stations if I was to do it again. Also, you don’t have to worry about missing your train if you end up wanting spend a little more time somewhere if you don’t buy in advance.

I see you're not familiar with antique. At least he didn't demand links in this thread.
