Thinking about taking a Labor Day weekend trip to Savannah. What are some of the can't miss things to do and go while there? Also, recommendations on the number of days to stay? Just me and the wife, no kids.

Looking at the Hamilton-Turner unless there are better recs for a place to stay. I have a bunch of Capital One points to burn and my original destination of Maine and New Hampshire are shut down. I did read through both of the stickied travel reports.

Thanks,

Post a trip recap
We are looking at a Charleston/Savannah trip within the next year.

We've been to Maine/New Hampshire area several times, can't go wrong there.

Yeah, I was really looking forward to it. I've heard the 14 day quarantine deal is not policed, but I didn't want to take the chance.

Yeah Maine has really been battling to get their tourism back open. The place we usually stay was really frustrated with their restrictions and the whole industry took a hit this summer. We were supposed to go back in May but had to cancel.

Unsure what it is like now but pre-Vid, this place had a phenomenal bar and good restaurant: The Grey

You can see all of Bay Street/ tourist area easily in a day. Forsyth Park and Tybee Island are worth seeing.

I'm from Savannah and Mom still lives there, so I can give some recommendations.

Tell me what kinds of things you and your wife like to do, food types, you like, etc.

Grey Bar for an amazing burger (I've heard the restaurant is good too but never been)
Lulu's Chocolate Bar near the market for desserts and chocolate martinis
Elizabeth's on 37th great dinner
Old Pink House has good dinner, classic southern fare
Husk for brunch, lunch or dinner
Coffee Fox/Foxy Loxy for the Mexican chocolate mocha
Chocolat by Adam Turoni for some incredible (but very expensive) chocolates
Two Tides and Service Brewery
Bay St is extremely meh and touristy, it's a much much worse version of Bourbon St

Lived in Charleston for a few years so I made about 4-5 weekend trips over the time. I always stayed at the Andaz it was very nice and centrally located.

Like others have said, I highly recommend the Grey. Andaz and Bohemeium are the two nicest hotels I’ve stayed at. Bohemeium has a great rooftop bar, there is one next door as well. On work trips I’ve stayed at the Brice using Priceline etc for as little as $100/night, which Is a steal.

This place just opened up. $350 million renovation of a old power plant. I haven't been yet, but people are raving about it.
Plant Riverside
It's on the nicer end of river street. Bohemian and Cotton Sail.

Take an afternoon to go see Ft. Pulaski. Well worth the time. Also, the 8th Air Force museum is about 15mins away in Pooler. Cool if you are into WWII stuff.

The Grey is worth checking out, but I actually had a better meal and time at the cocktail bar next door, Prohibition. And during happy hour, they have an entire food menu of items for $5.

We are both outdoors people. I'm a history buff. We love to eat and try new places. I'm a big beer guy.

The wife LOVES rooftop bars for some reason.

Savannah has been on the list for a while.

ETA: The Kimpton and the Hyatt are about the same rates. Hamilton-Turner is about $60 more per night. Any recommendations on which one is nicer, better located, and more "Savannah"? Thx.

Wormsloe Historic Site is worth a visit. It has over a mile long drive that is lined with 100 year old live oaks. There is a small visitor center. We were there last winter and did the guided tour walk to the old home; just the foundation remains. There are a few walking trails. We were there a couple of hours.

A breathtaking avenue sheltered by live oaks and Spanish moss leads to the tabby ruins of Wormsloe, the colonial estate of Noble Jones (1702–1775). Jones was a humble carpenter who arrived in Georgia in 1733 with James Oglethorpe and the first group of settlers from England. Wormsloe's tabby ruin is the oldest standing structure in Savannah.

OK, that gives me a few things to work with.

Take the walking tour of the squares. I know it's hot, but there a good amount of shade; the squares tell a great deal of the history of the city. Drive to Ft. Pulaski for sure. Forsyth Park has a local market on Saturday mornings that can be interesting. Also go to Wormsloe as mentioned. Bonaventure Cemetery is also interesting.

Food wise, hit up Mrs. Wilkes Boardinghouse for lunch one day. The Grey is good, Vic's is good (a HS classmate was the chef there for a while). Go to Leopold's for ice cream one night. If you want casual food instead of fancy for a meal, hit up Spanky's on River Street. The chicken fingers and spuds are a must have whenever I go home for a visit.

Hotel wise, the Klimpton and Bohemian are good. I've heard rave reviews about the Cotton Sail also.

Just got back. A little delayed getting over there......

Drove over Thursday AM through Atlanta. I don't know why I do that to myself. I've made a mental note to never travel through Atlanta again unless it's the airport.

All the recommendations for fine dining were booked a month out. We managed to get in at the Alligator Soul. It was OK. Certainly not worth what we paid, but the atmosphere was cool and the service was good. Hit a couple of spots for drinks and called it a night.

Got to run some Friday morning and see some of the city. That afternoon we took a trolley tour around town that we really enjoyed. We stopped at Leopold's for ice cream which was well worth the wait. Later that night we took a haunted pub crawl which the kids loved.

Saturday I ran again and saw the entire city and all the little parks first thing in the AM. I highly suggest this if you can do it. The city and it's parks are best viewed this way IMO. We had lunch at Vic's which was again, just OK. We had terribly SLOW service and it took us an hour and a half just to get out of there for lunch. That afternoon, the wife and I hit Fort Pulaski, Tybee Island, and the Tybee Island Lighthouse. All were worth the trip.

That night Savannah was packed. We lost count of the bachelorette groups we saw. The city was busting at the seams with 20-30 somethings all drinking and walking around. We ended up at my favorite place to eat of the weekend, Savannah Seafood Shack. The low country boil with extra sausage was very good. The rooftop bars were packed.

We stayed at the Bohemian and I'd highly recommend it. It's in the middle of everything and very nice. The staff there was over the top. Easily the friendliest service I've ever had at a hotel.

We checked Savannah off the list. It's a nicer, cleaner version of New Orleans, but at the end of the day, they've created a destination party town. which is fine, but at my age and stage in life, running around with the kids drinking to all hours of the morning just isn't for me anymore. I was told that St Augustine was a more subdued version of Savannah. We may try that one next.

Thanks again for all the help!
