Pros/cons?
Is this possible during busy weeks? Eyeing Mardi Gras or Easter next year.
Deluxe rack rates are ridiculous.

We did it once. Stayed at Old Key West, but has been probably 10 years ago. I have checked costs and it does seem like it saves money.

We did last year for the week after thanksgiving. Stayed in the two story villa at bay lake tower facing the magic kingdom. Wife said it saved us a good bit of money. There’s some website that she did it through. Requested the property and dates and they found the match for us to rent from.

You may want to consider getting a house just outside of Disney property.

Last year we rented a four bedroom house that was decked out in Disney decorations for a fraction of what we would have paid to stay at a moderate room during Mardi Gras. Took the money that we saved on the room and rented a tent campsite for the week. For an extra $65/day we had access to extra magic hours, free parking, free magic bands, and eligible for purchasing the dining plan. We were also able to get our fast passes 60 days out since we were now “staying” on property.

It is possible to do it for the busy weeks, but you need to book more than 7 months out to get the most desirable resorts. You can get Saratoga Springs or Old Key West only a few months out.

Cons: you have to be careful not to get ripped off by a scammer, once you commit you can't cancel (you can cancel a regular Disney reservation 30 days out and get a 100% refund),and they don't clean your room every day.

I rented at Animal Kingdom Lodge the week of Thanksgiving 3 years ago. Definitely worth it. I've rented points twice, Once through Dave's DVC rental and Once through the DVC Rental store. Both were good experiences, Dave's seemed to have more availability, they do require you to pay it all upfront though. I'd definitely rent from either of these companies again.

You can't cancel because the DVC owner has committed those points to that vacation for you. They're the ones doing all the work and you have to rely on them to secure the reservation and any requests. And with the bank/borrow structure (depending on the "use-year" month) those points used for the reservation may not be usable/bankable for future use once it's cancelled.

So he paid $400 for extra magic hours, parking, magic bands, fast pass booking 30 days early, and being "eligible" to pay another $2000 for half of his meals.

Now, it's obviously cheaper than simply getting the larger on-site room for the sole purpose of having these "perks". But to call it free is a stretch.

I disregarded the free part. But to get a bigger place while also keeping the perks of staying on site is enticing. So the next time I go, I’ll include that in the options I price out.

No doubt. It's definitely a deal if you're cool with driving/parking every day. I just laugh at how easily "free" gets used for things you pay for these days.

There's a radio ad around BR right now that claims 2 "free" rounds of golf at two different courses... for $59. It literally calls it free and gives you a price in the same sentence.

Yeah it gets a lot of people. Free shouldn’t be interchanged with “included in the price.”

We might just stay with my wife’s family in Lakeland and drive. Pay for the campground for the perks.

The only con's are that you need to do it 11 months in advance and it's non refundable...other than that, its the best wya to do it. Deluxe resorts for the price of a moderate going through Disney. You can always take out a separate insurance policy at a later date..although we never have.

Id also suggest using a service like DavidsDVCrentals.

Unless you personally know the owner I recommend using a broker for your own protection. It costs a little more to use a broker but they really do make it easier.

DVC Rental Store

I have used them 5 times in the past 6 years. They also offer insurance where you can cancel for any reason.

If your 7 months out, you can get pretty much any resort except Beach Club.

Only con would be you don't get daily maid service, but you can pay for it once you get your room.
