Rental car for Tulum

Headed to Tulum via Cancun. Looking to either do a rental car for the week or shuttle from the airport and taxi while there. Our house is about 10 minutes outside of Tulum near O Tulum. Does anyone have any experience traveling there and have recommendations? How easy is it to get a cab?

Better take a shuttle, that is not the safest drive

Book a private transfer. It should not be more than $150 round trip. They will stop for beer if you ask.
Route is safe to travel on.

Probably need to do some research on parking near the beach. I recall very limited parking, and cannot picture a single public lot. You might call a couple hotels and see if any will allow you to pay for day parking, then do the cost-benefit analysis against shuttle/cabs. I'd be more inclined to rent a car, if I could solve the parking issue. I don't believe that the highway from Cancun to Tulum is particularly dangerous.

It's probably the safest highway in Mexico.
When we went we originally had a car rented from National, but when we showed up it was a shitshow at that place, so we walked next door to Alamo and got a car. Super easy. We drove all over that state without issue.

I have done both.
I prefer a shuttle and taxis.
The shuttle was USA Transfers, about 170.00. (Private van)
We stayed near Tankah and it was 400 pesos each way to/from Tulum.
When we rented a van for the week, it was close to $500 plus gas, etc...

I did a private transfer as I read to many bad experiences with people renting cars to get to Tulum. Cops or people pretending to be cops will target the rental cars pull them over and ask for cash to get out of the ticket. Also if you go to Beach Rd parking will be a bitch. Easier to get a cab and they are cheap. If you plan on hitting a lot of areas outside of Tulum then a rental might be a better fit.

I have rented before and drove with no issues. If you decide to rent be aware that national brands in Mexico are franchises and different from the US. We used this company American Car Rental a couple of years ago and they were very highly regarded at the time and had no hidden fees. If you decide to rent, make sure you do current research
ETA: The airport charges higher rates, some of the rental companies have their locations offsite and run a free transfer. These companies will be cheaper than companies located on the airport grounds.

You are going to get plenty of people telling you it is safe and they did it, however it is not as safe as they make it sound. You are not driving in the USA or Europe.
Great place, but it is still riddled with corruption. Tourists are targets, even by the police. If you are cool possibly bribing a cop, go for it.

Thanks for all the feedback. I spend a lot of time on the Baja side of Mexico (Cabo), but this will be the first time in Tulum. Have seen a lot of positives to having a car. I think after weighing it out, we'll just stick to a shuttle so I can enjoy some drinks on the way down and not have to worry about it.

Good call. My last time there we used private shuttles, just the wife and I. It is so much more relaxing kicking back and drinking on the ride. It is a vacation after all.

Shop around for the shuttles. When we booked the prices varied a good bit between companies.

We rented a car twice. Once in Tulum to drive around and once in Cancun then drove to Tulum. The drive seemed safe enough, it's interstate most of the way IIRC and you can stop along the way at Cenotes. But I would probably recommend catching a shuttle to Tulum and getting a car there if you're just looking for a car to bounce around town.
If you have time, I'd recommend Akumal Beach just a few miles north of Tulum. It's a public beach and has sea turtles year round. They're only a 100 yards or less from the beach. And don't fall for any of the locals trying to "guide" you. Just put on a mask & snorkel and swim and you'll see them.
Here's a short video of my son swimming with a turtle.

On a side note...when were walking out of the Akumal Dive Shop after changing clothes, the Google Earth Street View car drove by. So my kids are on Google Earth waving at the car as it went by.

We rented a Suburban "limo" for a day and had a driver show us around in downtown Cancun. His name was Diego Geovani with Varguez Cab. I would recommend him.
Then, We rented a car through resort in Cancun and drove around after being with a local the previous day. Driving wasn't an issue at all in Mexico.
Cancun and vicinity have better roads than most of Louisiana and all of New Orleans.

Just rent a car. It's a very easy place to get a round and you won't have any issue. Just make sure the car you rent has full coverage for everything in case you hit something.
I drove all around and didn't have any issue. Just be aware of the huge speed bumps.
ISIS car rental had good reciews so I went with them and they were great to deal with.
Unless you just plan on sitting in the resort it will be way more economical to rent. It will also save you alot of time because you can go wherever you want and not have to wait.
