Anybody down there right now and dealing with this? How bad is it? We are due to arrive tomorrow and staying in N Reddington Beach area for a week.

It’s been positively catastrophic.

They recovered over 1,000,000 pounds of dead fish from Tampa Bay in the past two weeks.

The latest data from NOAA indicates that the red tide is moving out of the Tampa Bay wrapping around Pinellas County heading north towards Clearwater.

You will definitely want to look at the advisories before heading into the water.

We are headed to that area on Wednesday for my brothers wedding. They are getting married in St Pete Beach. Everything I’m seeing references red tide and I’ve never heard of it. There is mention of inhalation hazard? Not sure if that is for marine life or humans?

Is it something that will keep the beaches closed or at least strongly discouraged from getting in the water?

Supposedly this red tide is as bad as it can get for the Tampa area. They are talking many years before the fishery can recover, if ever returning to prior level.

This has been a historically bad red tide for Tampa Bay. I’ve been here for nearly 20 years and I’ve never seen one quite like this.

Beaches do remain open and there are certainly people enjoying them. Red tide does cause respiratory problems for certain sensitive groups as well as some people complaining of irritation of the eyes.

Depending on the tides, you may deal with dead fish being pushed into shore at high tide. This causes the additional problem of the smell of dead and decaying fish.

Water quality is tested daily and; if necessary, beach closures will be made by the local authorities.

We talked to the hotel we are staying at in Tierra verde last night and again today. They said it’s improving daily and the worst of it is behind us.

Any truth to that or are they trying to get us to not cancel our trip?

IM just below Tampa this week at Anna Maria Island and its not here right now. Beaches are clean and the water is great. Can change day to day but its been good for a few days.

Hearing horror stories of Tampa Bay just above us

I think they are correct; the worst is likely behind us. That is to say, the Bay itself is a virtual dead zone that will need a decade or more to recover.
