Want to take the family of four (9 yo and 12 yo) on a beach trip that is more exciting for them than normal. Unfortunately we dont have passports for all and of course cant get them quick enough to leave mid-late July. Anybody have any suggestions on lodging, looking for a family friendly resort that offers enough to hang around there and beach for a couple of days then spend a couple days sightseeing.

Thank you guys, this board is spectacular for info for the inexperienced traveler.

The only real resort on St. John is the Westin. There are more options for sure on St. Thomas.

Air BnB's / VRBO's can be same price/cheaper as well. There are plenty available on or near the beach. They have condo type homes that may be another option if you can't find anything else besides the Westin.

I'm sure you meant to respond to the OP. I am well aware of all of the options available on St. John.

It was just a general comment. Don't crucify me, I know you are the residential USVI guy. You have also given me info since I haven't actually been. But I have done a ton of research. Just trying to help OP if they wanted other options than the Westin.

St John is an island getaway. Lots and lots of unique beaches, and they are awesome. Good hiking. Good restaurants. But the appeal is that it isn't some mega resort along 30A. Most of the island is a National Park.

I'd find a house or condo in or near Cruz bay (VRBO or other), rent a jeep, and load the family up each day. You can pick a different beach each morning and afternoon if you want to, go on a hike, or visit Coral Bay.
There are some hidden beaches, like off of Little Cinnamon that are fun adventures for the kids. We had the entire beach all to ourselves.

St Thomas is more touristy, has more infrastructure, but I honestly haven't spent much time there.

It's good. Apologies if I was harsh.

Nah not harsh. Just tryina help where I can.

I'm getting married there in Feb and I cannot tell you how much research I've done for myself, family, and our few guests.

I really hope they open up travel while I'm there. I want to go to JVD and Foxys. Not to mention the Batholites. I definitely want to see that...I just don't think I'll be able to.

For OP, if you ever go back with family make sure to have passport. There are so many places you can go from STJ.

I wanted to do BVI when I was there, but couldn't.
Honestly, it wasn't that big of a deal. I had plenty of fun and plenty of things to do on St John.

As an adult trip, we didn't mind doing even more beach time/ relaxing than we'd typically want to do with kids the age of the OP.
However, you can still do boating, even if it isn't to BVI. Snorkeling, sunset cruises, fishing charters. Lots of options.

Yea, there really are tons of options. We ended up chartering a boat for Sunday to take us hopping around. Not sure where we will go, but we have the boat for 3 hours. Since JVD is probably out of the question we went ahead and locked that in.

I think being 8 months out there might be a chance things open back up.
Have fun OP, please post pics and update about how they are with COVID when you go.

We are trying to make a decision between there and Hawaii.

Going in July in Hurricane season has me somewhat concerned. Not for our safety, just that a storm may upset our trip.

I have contacted the folks with the boat outings and that seems like a great way to spend a day. After that was hoping to do some of the pirate history stuff, mainly for me. Then a couple excursions to the smaller beaches as mentioned. Seems like a perfect 5 day get away and not too terribly expensive.

I was there during a hurricane.
We still went to the beach and drank.
Not much different than louisiana and a hurricane. Lol.

I've been to both st john and Hawaii (Maui).
St john has more of an outdoors person appeal to it. Better hiking and beaches. More relaxing and appreciating the beauty of the place.

Maui had a more modern feel to it. Golf courses. Spas. Mini malls. It does have beautiful scenery. It has the pomp of the Hawaiian dance shows. You can swim in waterfalls. See humpback whales. Maui was more of a sightseeing adventure. But it'll cost you 3-5-10-20x as much to go to Hawaii.

You honestly can't go wrong with either option.
I'd recommend doing both before kids leave the nest. Just depends on which vacation you are looking for.

Hawaii is an adventure in paradise with modern amenities.
St john is a relaxing getaway where you can see the beauty of an island preserved nearly the way God intended. It does have restaurants, groceries, etc, but it's not commercialized yet.

You know your family best and what you'd enjoy more. But I'd do St john now and Hawaii later (I'd want more than 5 days to do hawaii).

Anyone should feel free to correct me if they feel differently.

What are the can't miss beaches or sights if you have a jeep? Staying in Coral Bay so not afraid to drive.

Trunk Bay, Maho, Hawks Nest. Skinny Legs for lunch. If you're a hiker St. John is your dream.

I liked little cinnamon the best, but trunk and maho are 1, 2 on the can't miss list.

Skinny legs for sure.
Lime out sounds cool... if they are opened back up.
Bushwackers, pain killers. Rinse, repeat.

Lots of look outs to hike to. Basically, st john is a post card dream. Trunk might be the most photogenic beach there is (especially when there's nobody on it).

I'm fond of this little gem for photogenic with a rock formation in the shape of a dragon.
