Recommendations on a Quick Weekend Getaway Spot Near DFW
Posted on 7/18/17 at 5:52 pm

I moved the family out here to the DFW area a little over a year ago, and the wife and I haven't ever really explored a spot for a quick weekend getaway without the kids.
Probably nothing more than 2 hours out of the way would work.
Anyone familiar with the area have any recommendations?

Granbury, Texas
little lake with bed and breakfast type stuff. diners and nik-nak shopping for the mrs. revolver brewery close by, a few wineries too (not sure if good or not). kind of like a north texas version of fredricksburg imo

If you haven't spent any time in Fort Worth, that is a good weekend place.

Take a look at a place called Rough Creek Lodge outside of Glen Rose. It is a family resort/executive retreat, but there are plenty of ways to be away from everyone. This is perfect for a weekend getaway...but it will be a bit pricey.
Honestly, one of the best restaurants you can find, and I don't throw that around lightly. the Metroplex has a TON of amazing dining experiences, but the wife and I still consider RCL one of the best, and will frequently make the drive.

Checking out Lake Murray, OK this weekend. The lodge isn't half bad at all. Will have a better review tomorrow, but not bad and not expensive. Was less than 2hrs from Addison on a Friday evening. Stopped at WinStar for food.
ETA: Recommend! Great little state park. We stayed in the lodge and it is probably nicer than some hotels I've stayed in. Our room is pretty big and has a super nice lake view. There's a cafeteria onsite, but you are only 8 miles from Ardmore and we had two really good meals there today (breakfast and dinner).
There's an onsite water craft rental place so we rented wave runners and rode around on the lake. The water is nice. Very Lake Travis-esque, but with far fewer people.
It has been good for my husband and I, but there are lots of families. The drawbacks have been: no pool (they are building it now), goose poop on the walkways (so many geese here), and no elevator in the building we're in...all so very minor. The lobby of the lodge has couches that we went and sat on for a while and adorandack chairs on a balcony.
I keep forgetting we're at a state park. My expectations weren't terribly high, so I've been pleasantly surprised.

Is that state park near the Indian casino? I'm looking for a long weekend and remembered a friend tell me about a nice state park with a casino within an hour or less away.
ETA- sorry just saw the part about the WinStar. How is that casino? Looking at a possible long weekend next week and was thinking of this trip.

Yep, about 30 miles. We stopped both times to get food. The ratings of the casino are horrible, but I was there for food. OK has bizarre gambling/alcohol rules, so you may just want to stop for food.
We brought some food with us too because the room had a mini fridge. We also ate in Ardmore. Breakfast at Prairie Kitchen--I really liked it, though the place needs a good clean. And dinner at Cafe Alley--there was a wait at 5:40 on a Saturday night! All of the people were really nice. The food was good, but the place is a little small.
If you go, come back to this thread and let me know what you thought. There's a nature center close by that we saw on the wave runners that I'd like to visit. There are trails too and a golf course. It is just way too hot right now to spend a ton of time outside not on water.

Lived in Stephenville for awhile, it's 30 miles from Granbury and it's a nice little town.
Farina's is an Italian spot that I love down there, I believe there is also a Bed and Breakfast above the restaurant. It's right on the square.
Rough creek is nice as well, just not cheap. Granbury would be a much cheaper option, if you aren't looking to spend a whole lot.

Lush resort on possum kingdom lake

Agree with Rough Creek
Inn on the Lake in Granbury is surprisingly nice. Some suites have steam showers and fireplaces
Lush at Lake PK is beautiful on the outside although I've never stayed there
OK casinos are huge collections of white trash
