re: Portugal safe areas... Traveling alone
Damn, apparently safe means afraid to die. I was just curious about certain neighborhoods that I should avoid. I'm not afraid of getting killed, mugged maybe, maybe someone wants to keep me as a houseboy, maybe someone wants to sell me to the Chinese

I quoted murder stats as an overall indicator of crime rates, to make a point about relative safety. Americans are scared out of their minds about crime abroad, when the homefront is a more dangerous place. A country with legal drugs and universal healthcare isn't Nigeria, or Brazil.

It comes down to common sense. It's pretty easy to see when an area gets rougher so avoid that area. Of course, if it is a concern for you then stick to the tourist areas. It's not something I do as I'm an explorer when I travel but if that's what makes you feel safer then so be it.

The only exception I've seen to this rule is Havana where repair is needed everywhere. However, I found the Cuban people to be very friendly and helpful so we had no issues there.

We have several threads about things to do but I'm more interested in where not to go.
I will have a front pocket wallet and will not carry any cash. I will be staying 3 blocks from the city center in Lisbon and spending a day in Sintra and Faro so essentially 4 days in Lisbon. My plan right now is to be back at my hotel by 10 pm every night just to avoid any issues, but anything else I should worry about? Pickpockets I know about

Portugal is extremely safe. You will have no issues in the places you are going.

To answer your question though, the Bairro 6 de Maio neighborhood is a place to avoid but as a tourist you won't end up there unless you go searching for it. It's filled with Cape Verdeans who came to Portugal after their independence.

However, they are in the process of bulldozing most of that neighborhood so they won't be there for long.

Keep a couple of credit cards and ID in hotel safe in event your wallet is taken or lost. Something I always do now since I was robbed in Dubai a few years ago.

We walked back to the hotel rather late a couple of times from dinner and fado shows. It's fine. Safer than most American cities. Tons of tourists in Lisbon/Portugal.

Just use your noggin as you would anywhere. Great place. Enjoy.
