I'll be traveling to Portugal for about 7 days this May and wondering if anyone has some suggestions on what to do or see. Never been and have a week off from work so figured no better time than now. I've got nothing rigid planned and am open to visiting anywhere in the country. Thanks!

Lagos and Porto are must sees. If you like castles, check out Sintra right outside of Lisbon.

We are looking at going there soon. What do think a good amount of time is and what do you recommend?

I agree that there are some places you can “overstay”. Sure, there’s always more to do if you have unlimited time, but I prefer to see more places.

I'm doing Portugal soon as well, 8 days spending most of it in Lisbon. I have 2 day trips planned to a few local cities as well. Still in the process of planning everything else though

We stayed in Lisbon 4 nights and Porto 3. I could have stayed longer, especially Porto which was at least as enjoyable as Lisbon. But I like to experience the vibe of a place rather than see a bunch of tourist sites. we did do a day trip to Sintra which was good.

That's a pretty dumb statement. We did 8 days in July 2017 and I didn't even begin to scratch the surface.
Hell, I'd like a week just to knock out the Azores if I had time, let alone the mainland.

Where are you flying into/out of?

You'll want to spend most of your time in Lisbon and Porto.

Lisbon - I would spend 2 nights minimum. There's a ton more to see, but I'm listing the main things I would check out below:

Belem District (Belem Tower, Jeronimos Monastery, Padrao de Descobrimentos)
Baixa/Alfalma (Castelo de S Jorge, Carmo Museum, Rua Augusta)
Additionally, Baixa and surrounding areas are a ton of fun to explore. Very hilly. There's also a place in the Belem area called Pasteis de Belem. Very famous little deserts. Worth a quick stop.

Sintra - I would do 2 nights here as well

Quinta da Regaleira, Pena Palace, Castle of the Moors, Monserrate Palace are all must-sees. Traffic in Sintra is an absolute shitshow though.

Porto - 2 nights minimum here

Have to knock out a port lodge tour and tasting. We did Graham's. I'd recommend it. Se Cathedral and Clerigos Tower are good sights. I was too drunk after the port tour to see Bolsa Palace and Igreja de Sao Francisco, but they were on our list.

Day 7. For your last day, you could either add on a day to Lisbon/Porto or add in a day trip. Tomar is really cool. Check out the aqueduct and Templar castle. Evora is supposed to be worth a stop as well. Both are a bout 2 hours train from Lisbon. Braga looks to be an hour train from Porto, so that could be an option as well.

Was there last month. Don’t miss the Douro River Valley. We stayed in a small hotel in Pinhao. Beautiful small town on the river surrounded by vineyards

Where did you stay in Pinhao? We stayed at Quinta de La Rosa two summers ago and loved it. A nice place that is pretty reasonable for what you get.

Portugal is awesome and the Douro Valley is high on the list if you’re looking for a slower pace. I’ve also heard good things about Antelejo.
