Wife and I are heading to Portland in a few weeks. Anyone have recs on a wine tour while up there. Would love to see willamette valley - smaller group the better. We did Napa w a driver and 4 people and it was great.

Also, any must see spots to hit up? We made reservations at Beast and Le Pigeon.

Thanks - and I still owe this board a review of South Africa and plan to write it (probably on the flight to Portland!)

I went mainly for beer but Kennedy School should be a must, the Japanese Botanical Garden, Type writer place, Mount Hood and the waterfalls should be a must as well.
If you can a Sounders game

Japanese Garden is really neat to see
Take the drive down the Columbia River Gorge, several stops with short hikes to some waterfalls

Too bad you aren't here for beer. Bend brewfest is Aug 10-12.

I would, and always do, recommended taking a drive to Bend.

If you do go one day, take highway 26. It takes you past Hood and it's the prettiest and fastest way to go despite what maps says.

On that drive at one point you can see 9/10 Of the Major Oregon Cascade Mountains at once.

I don't do wine so I'm of no help there. Have fun.

Only if the Sounders are playing against the Timbers that while in town...

I have heard that getting a driver to do the wine country is the way to go. I'm sure there is plenty of info about it on the internet. I'm not a wine guy, so...

I second what everybody else is saying. Take a drive out to Hood River. I always recommend crossing over into Washington on the Bridge of the Gods and then crossing back into Oregon on the Hood River Bridge. The view from the Washington side is much better because the road on the Oregon side is set back from the River and your view of the gorge is usually blocked by trees. Plus, the view of Oregon is better from Washington, because you can actually see Mt Hood from the Washington side.

Bend it the tits and a beautiful drive. It is about 3 and a half hours, though, so going down and back is a long day. They river float through downtown Bend is a lot of fun.

Another nice little trip is to go out to Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast. It's about an hour and a half drive from Portland.

ETA: Google images of Ecola State Park and/or Cannon Beach, if you want to know what's out that way.

On a flight back from Portland right now and will be making a review thread sometime within the next couple of days.

Unless something changes in the next 10 days, don't waste your money on the Japanese Gardens. It was lame as hell. Nothing blooming, just green leaf trees. The most exciting part was seeing several large koi fish and that's a snoozer. Wish I hadn't spent $30 on me and the SO to go. Instead go across the street to the rose garden. It's free and beautiful.

Thanks for the info - don't think we will be able to make it to Bend given how far the drive is but wish we could.

Looking forward to the review.

I'm still trying to find a driver for the wineries and a place for 4 for dinner Thursday night (wife, and 2 friends from college)

It damn near did . I went back there again on Sunday in lieu of going to Cascade because I couldn't get over the greatness of that place. IMO it truly is the GOAT brewery there. But like I said, more to follow in the review thread!

There are a lot of breweries here that specialize in a lot of different styles.

Great Notion makes several styles really well and is a super comfortable place to hang out. It has an old school bar vibe to it and a nice casual outdoor area to hang out in.

As far as being the GOAT, it depends on what style of beer you like and what kind of atmosphere you like. Some places that have good, but not great beer make up for it with incredible atmosphere, view, whatever. I always tell people that 10 Barrel is a great place to hang out, and their beer is better than you think, because they don't distribute their best beers. But their roof top bar and main bar area are really cool and there are always a lot of hot babes there. Base Camp has a really cool atmosphere. Breakside has a great mix of great beer and cool atmosphere. pFriem in Hood River has views that are killer, and they make great beer. The list goes on...
