Just got back from vacation in Playa Mujeres. We stayed at Excellence Playa Mujeres. On the drive to the resort, we noticed there was a gate on the main road before you get to the resorts in PM. Then each resort is gated. We felt very safe while we were there. I know another poster asked about safety.
Once we got to the resort, I mentioned that we were there for our anniversary. We ate lunch while we waited for our room to finish getting ready. After we got to our room, we noticed the hotel had put a happy anniversary sign on the door, rose petals on the bed, had a bottle of champagne in the room and upgraded our room. I’m sure it’s something they do often but it was a nice touch that made the stay special. Our room was a 2 story rooftop terrace suite with a plunge pool on the top floor. I had no idea what a plunge pool was before we got there but it’s basically a large hot tub that isn’t hot. There was an arbor above the pool so it stayed cool. There were also 2 large lounge areas on the top floor.
One of the main reasons we stayed at Excellence was that my wife has celiac disease and has to eat a gluten free diet. Excellence had tons of options for her. Every meal that we had was delicious. This is our second all inclusive and it blew the first one we stayed at out of the water.
We spent most of our time around the pool or beach. The beach and first 20 or so feet of ocean were free of seaweed. The seaweed on the floor of the ocean started when we got about waist deep in the water.
We did take a day trip to Isla Mujeres. We took a taxi to the ferry and the ferry across. I think the taxi was $15 each way. We got a golf cart once we got to Isla and started driving around. The beach at Isla was better than Playa. We did some shopping and stopped for lunch. I don’t remember the name of the place where we ate but it was very good and cheap. The couple that went to the island with us was ready to get back so we left shortly after that. The husband of the couple that went with us spoke fluent Spanish which was super helpful. I’m sure we could have gotten by without him but it definitely helped. The next time my wife and I go back, we plan to spend more time on the island. I can definitely see why Isla gets recommended as much as it does.

tl;dr Would definitely recommend Excellence Playa Mujeres

I only took a few pics. Here are some food pics. One was from the Mexican restaurant at the resort. The other was the tapas restaurant.
