An Alaska Airlines jetliner struck a brown bear while landing early Saturday evening in Yakutat, killing the animal and causing some damage to the plane. No one in the plane was hurt.
Airport crew members had cleared the runway about 10 minutes before flight 66 was expected to land, said Sam Dapcevich, a public information officer for the state’s Department of Transportation. The crews did not see any signs of wildlife during the check, but as the plane began to slow after landing, Dapcevich said, the pilots spotted two bears crossing the runway.
“The nose gear missed the bears, but the captain felt an impact on the left side after the bears passed under the plane,” a statement from Alaska Airlines said.
The Boeing 737-700 struck and killed a brown bear sow, but its cub, thought to be roughly 2 years old, was uninjured, Dapcevich said.
The pilots saw the “bear lying about 20 feet off the center of the runway,” as the plane taxied to parking just before 6:30 p.m., according to Alaska Airlines.

The cub got away at least, not showing pics of the dead momma bear

incredibly beautiful place, the airport is a WWII project with a long strip into the forest. Adventure landing there most days. It's the northern leg of the Milk Run between Anchorage and Juneau.

Considering some of the bird impacts I've seen damage pics of, expected much worse for a bear.

Was going relatively slow when it hit the hit, 60kt or so. The bear is an absolute mess, really messed it up.

Really wish I wouldn’t have seen the bear pic.
I do like what Alaska air did logistically, they diverted a plane flying from Seattle-anchorage to yakutat to pick up the crew and passengers continuing on from yakutat since there’s virtually no where to put them up for the night.
It’ll be a lot easier to get them where they’re going from Anchorage vs. yakutat.

The Bear’s Den has vacancies.

Thats horrible, but bound to happen now and then. I saw a deer cut perfectly in half by a King Air 200 prop one time.

Yep, most of the rooms there are seasonal.
It would be a great place to b stranded in the summer.

It’s never pretty. I saw the after pics of a deer that got decapitated by a CR7 at V1 speed. A mess.
