Phone Service In Italy
Posted by Nole Man on 5/22/18 at 6:15 am00
Going to Italy and Slovenia this fall. Last couple of trips to Europe we just went into a phone store and they popped in a SIM card in wife's iPhone. Think Orange and Vonage are some of the primary carriers. It's invaluable for Google Maps, looking for places to stay or eat on Trip Advisor etc.
Anyway, anyone have any recent experiences or thoughts they'd like to share?
Thanks!!

Didn’t bother with a chip in Feb. Managed to get by with hotel WiFi and only turned the phone on for three days of a two week trip, so charges were minimal.
Download your Google maps for offline use. You will still get the “blue dot” illustrating your position on the map even without turning on cellular service. A great and often overlooked feature...

ALL of this. You can find WiFi pretty much everywhere there is civilization in Italy. Tons of apps have call and messaging features. Not really worth turning service on, and it's nice not to have the phone distracting you the whole time you're abroad.
I am using Orange Holiday at the moment in Greece ($50 at Amazon for 10GB for 14 days) and I am 100% satisfied. It has been working fine in France, Italy, and Greece. Thethering works great so we are using 2 phones with 1 sim card purchase. I will go with sim card method again for any overseas travel.

i always get a data only plan if i will be in any country longer than a few days..
iirc last time i was in country (2017) it was like 20€ for 10gigs from the TIM store in rome..i believe it also came with 500mb of roaming outside italy.
you just tell(or show what you want), give passport&phone..and they give you back your phone with service.
the 4G from TIM fast enough for video chat..and being able to use uber anywhere is worth the 10-15 mins it takes to sign up (to me)
