Driving to NYC next month and wonder if anyone has a hidden gem when it comes to parking.

Free street parking is the best option but maybe a cheap lot.

Last year I took the train into Penn Station from Hamilton,NJ and the train station parking cost $10/day.

Does that even exist? How many days will you need to park?

Saturday until Tuesday morning. They used to have free parking in the neighborhoods. And during the summer it used to be easy to park for free because everyone goes to the Jersey Shore or the Hamptons.

Jody, you and I are distant relatives (I checked in the 80s).

More importantly, I have some NYC parking tips for you.

Message me at [deleted] and I'll send 'em over. Or I can put them here too, but I wanted to say hello, just the same.

I'm gonna delete that e-mail address soon, from this thread.

Do you have to drive? If not, you'll regret this.

Lol i chose to walk a mile to my gym than drive 5 minutes. I would never drive in NYC, and that was in Brooklyn.

It’s not that bad. I wouldn’t want to do it everyday, but it’s manageable. It’s better than driving in Baton Rouge.

Yes, there is still free parking in certain areas. You will have to be aware of alternate side of the street parking, however.

You should never need a car in big cities with mass transport like New York, Boston or Chicago

I would pick a NJ train stop along the NE Corridor and park there. Saves you the toll and bridge cost for driving into the city. Lived there a long time and there isn’t much free parking up there. New Brunswick, Menlo Park, Edison, Metuchen, will have cheaper parking. It’s a short train ride into the city. I’d pay to park for the peace of mind. The car is safe and you’ll know it won’t get towed.
Even cheaper option is to go all the way up to jersey city or Hoboken and park there. It’s a cheap path train in and out of the city. Path runs all night.
Parking in the city has got to be close to $50 or more per night. I would think. I never bring a car there.

i have no clue how people drive in Manhattan, it's insane. it's as traffic laws dont exist. the pedestrians are just as worse.

i live in Los Angeles and can manage through traffic here just fine. I'd be terrified if i had to drive in manhattan.

Listen to this advice OP. He can probably get further up the Northeast Corridor line (Newark, Secaucus, linden) to find parking a bit closer. Those tolls to get into the city...how much does it cost now? Some ungodly amount i bet

I grew up in nj and while taking the train has its advantages when going to the garden or when drinking, id much prefer drive when going in during the day to see a play or go to a museum. You can find parking for $20 if you look for it. Follow waze to get around the traffic, way easier imo.
