Hey guys, made a post last week about finding a cabin near for a quick trip, well that has turned into going to NYC for a few days. Any good recs? Looking for sites to see, places to go, Resturants to eat. I really don't want to be touristy. I want to really see what a city like that has to offer.

Well that's a complete 180.

Budget? Number of people? Time of year?

If you like breweries, check out:

Other Half
Threes
Grimm (if their brewery is open when you go)
Singlecut

For nicer meals:

Le Coucou - seriously the best meal and dining experience of my life
Gramercy Tavern

Staying around Midtown East

Then the first thing I'd recommend is:

Do NOT do this. Midtown is the worst. I don't even live in NY (travel there fairly often for work though) and when I walk through Midtown even I start thinking "goddamn tourists get out of my way."

There's so many good restaurants that it can be overwhelming. If it's you and the wife, and you're not on a super tight budget (which it sounds like you're not) but you're also not making it rain throughout the city, I would pick one nice place to go for dinner one night. Again, I would highly recommend Le Coucou.

You can go to Gramercy Tavern for lunch and sit at the bar and get our of there for a reasonable price.

Damn. It's already booked. Wife isn't the super explorer. She wants to see some of the bigger normal attractions. It's mainly her trip so whatever. It's 3 days.

You hit the nail on the budget. We'll look into that place. Thanks for the tip.

If you don't want to break the budget you can do an app called Todaytix and usually find a cheap broadway show at the 2 PM Saturday showing. We did that and then had a good dinner at Grammercy Tavern that night.

I can recommend a ton of places to eat. I think a really fun afternoon is lunch at either the Chelsea Market, or at Santina (under the High line, serves Amalfi coast type food) and then walk the Chelsea high line for a bit.
Also, lunch at Grimaldi's under the Brooklyn Bridge and walk it off over the bridge back into Manhattan is pretty cool.

My favorite cheap thing to do (slightly touristy, but fun esp when the weather is nice): walk across the Brooklyn Bridge into Brooklyn, then take a water taxi back up to Midtown. Cheap, scenic, offers a different perspective....

One touristy thing that you should absolutely do is the World Trade Center Memorial.

You'll get plenty of recommendations in Manhattan, but let me know if you plan to head over into Brooklyn. I live in Chicago, but my parents live in Williamsburg, so I've gotten to know Brooklyn, relatively, well.

I lived in park slope for years, a lot of charming neighborhoods to walk thru in BK. Carroll gardens, dumbo, prospect heights, park slope are just incredible.

Lucali is probably the best pizza in Brooklyn (could argue Di Fara) and is one of the most charming restaurants in the entire city. BYOB. Get there right as they open or be prepared to wait.

Robertas was at the forefront of the hipster movement in Brooklyn and serves great pizza. If you can handle eclectic it is a great spot.

Emily is another incredible pizza spot with the "best burger in NYC". Be prepared to wait.

I really like Williamsburg Pizza for drunk square slices.

Been to New York 5 times now, stayed in Times Square for 4 of them and stayed in Williamsburg in December to see something different and this was my most enjoyable time
Pies n Thighs for some southern fried chicken and mac and cheese
9/11 memorial for sure. All the other tourist stuff isn't that great ( I was on top of the WTC in late August 2001, so this really meant a lot to me , I'd plan a lighter day if you do this first thing as it was draining emotionally )
Barcade- play arcade games together and drink beer, cool place in williamsburg

Been to NYC several times.

Some recommendations:

1. Use the subway
2. 9/11 Museum
3. Peter Luger steakhouse
4. A Broadway play
5. A comedy club (such as Caroline's)

We enjoyed Tavern on the Green. Had lunch then strolled out the back, right into Central Park. Walked around and took photos for a couple hours

Trade Center area is a must do. Also you can walk to the harbor from there and see the Statue

The wife always has to go to Serendipity3. Loves the frozen hot chocolate. Carmines for Italian. Large portions. Pricey, but Michaels Jordans Steakhouse inside Grand Central Station is good, and great for people watching

We go every year at Thanksgiving & have been staying at Hotel Beacon in the Upper West Side. You’ll live like a local in this area. Walk to Central Park, plenty of local eateries. Across the street from Trader Joe’s and right next to the 72nd St station with express to Times Square. Prices are usually very reasonable at the Beacon compared to mid town & you get a kitchenette which makes it kind of like a condo.

If you are there for the weekend, you can get a good deal at a great hotel in the Downtown area. Downtown Marriott is right at the WTC site. Great shopping at Century 21. Easy subway access and close access to Ellis Island and Statute of Liberty. Lots of eating near there where locals eat. One of my favorites is Georges, a true NYC deli/diner

If you want to splurge Del Frisco's 1221 6th Ave in Entertainment District.

Lots of cheap great authentic food in Chinatown and Little Italy.
Tavern on the Green has reopened and isn't too terribly expensive at lunch.
Of course, have a street dog and pretzel. Don't be afraid, these carts are well regulated.
