Wife and I going to NYC for a long weekend at the first of August. Little overwhelmed with hotel options, I have been before, but always stayed with a buddy who lived there.

Nothing big planned, probably get a show and go to at least one nice dinner. Where do you guys recommend? Any general area to avoid?

Not looking for cheapest or nicest, just a good bang for bunk and convenience.

Sorry if already posted, I searched.

I like the Lexington. Reasonable rates. Convenient to grand central. Marriott property.

I would try to avoid the Times Square area.

Avoid Times Square. Plenty places right outside of it.

Hilton Midtown is in a great location. Waking distance to Rock Ctr, Central Park, and Times Sq.

If you're planning to do things in the Times Square area there's no reason to avoid it--it's convenient and fun for a short visit. I highly recommend the Crowne Plaza right in Times Square. If you want to be outside the Times Square zone, a bit more sedate, but walking distance, I highly recommend the Roosevelt Hotel. (between Madison and Park on 45th) a block from Grand Central Terminal. Very nice!

ETA--I agree the Hilton midtown is great too--by Rockefeller Center

Thanks everyone.

I always hear "avoid times square", I guess because of the crowds and tourist stuff? I can see that, but I am a tourist...so

I would like to to be somewhat accessible to Central Park as I like to run in the mornings and think that would be a nice option.

Any opinions on Hilton Garden Inn's Times Square South and another on 52nd? How about the Edison?

There's no reason to avoid Times square if you intend to do things there. If you plan on seeing a show at night, it's nice to come out of a theater late and be just a quick walk to your hotel. Everything else you want to do outside Times Square is accessible by walking (in many cases) or subway or taxi.
When i visit the city it is to see a show and if I stay over, Times Square Crowne Plaza is my choice. But if I were going to do other sightseeing, the Hilton Midtown is really nicely located.

Also---a block west of Broadway is 8th avenue---there's a Hampton Inn on 8th (around 50th or 51st if I remember correctly) where I've stayed twice and it was perfectly nice too....easy walk to the shows....more reasonably priced in that direction from Broadway but still perfectly safe (I am a woman and I always travel in with a female friend for a show and we felt safe there)

Hilton Garden Inn's Times Square South

Stayed there once a few years ago & found it noisy. I avoid Times Square even if playing tourist. Fine to walk thru, but NYC has too many other interesting things to see/do without the need to be immersed in the zillion and one people wandering through there every single time you leave your hotel.

I like staying in the Garment District: the Archer Hotel is small, comfortable, and has a very helpful & friendly staff. Have also enjoyed stays at the Parker on 56th street--that's two blocks from Central Park. The Parker has a few handicapped accessible rooms; those are larger & more spacious than the average room.

This Hilton and a block or two away is the Sheraton Times Square. Neither are on Times Square but within walking distance.

I don't hate Times Square like some, but there are parts of it (or hotels in specific areas adjacent to it) where you pretty much HAVE to go through it if ubering/getting a taxi to other parts of Manhattan. And that gets annoying if you're doing it numerous times on a trip.

I would avoid times square for your hotel. I did that once and every trip to and from the subway I had to wade through a couple of thousand people; it was annoying and wasted a lot of time. Of course your going to visit the area, but stay next to another subway station

Hyatt Union Square is awesome; we stay there every trip to NYC; it's walkable to the Village, SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc. Can also take the L train from Union Square to Williamsburg.
