Looking for somewhere within an 8 hours drive from BR to bring the family (5 kids 12 and under) that’s not a tourist trap. Outdoor stuff like hiking, fishing, boating is preferred.

Chattanooga is nice this time of year.

Tons of stuff for kids. Chickamauga lake is right here as are numerous hiking trails and civil war history. You can rent a Pontoon for a couple days on the lake.

With those parameters, my guess would be Ozarks in ArKansas or maybe near the Chattahoochee mountains in Georgia.

I would go Ozarks too, a little further than 8 hours but doable. Enough non touristy stuff to enjoy!
