Heading there next week for 4 nights with wife and my 14 and 12 year old. First time for us. Besides the 911 memorial, no definite plans. Staying in Central Park area... must do recommendations appreciated plus your must go to restaurants.

Do some digging. There’s approximately 1,000 threads on here with tons of good information.

There is a lot to do in NYC. 4 days will go quickly. Just do the thing your group will enjoy.
Plan to hit some good restaurants in a neighborhood like Little Italy.
Ride the Staten Island Ferry after you do the 911 Museum.
Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty were cool too.

New York in One Day Guided Sightseeing Tour runs $89 per head on Tripadvisor. Over 1,000 reviews, and 5 star rated.
You get on a small bus (not that hop on/hop off crap) with a good guide and cover many major spots in Manhattan, including the 911 memorial and a boat trip out to the Statue of Liberty.
It's a good first day way to see the highlights and get your bearings.
Ride the subway to Brooklyn and walk back across the Brooklyn Bridge. Amazing views.
If you go to the Empire State Building, go early to avoid the lines. I sweated whether to pay the extra fee to skip lines, but decided to take a chance. We got there about 9 am on a summer Friday and walked right in with no wait. When we came down an hour later, people were lined up pretty deep.

It is not a must do but since you are at Central Park, St. John pizza isn't too far from you. Great pizza and one of the few meals that won't break the bank.

On the corner of W58th and 9th, Fluffy`s is a good spot for just about anything food related. Not overpriced! I recommend the Ultimate burger. Tell the kids "Why don't We" (boy band) eats there. They will know who I'm talking about. One morning, get a bagel at Chelsea market, then walk the high line to the Vessel at Hudson Yard. Try the Bronx Zoo. St. Patrick Cathedral, Top of the Rock, and Radio City Music Hall are cool places to check out. Don't forget Tiffany's near Trump tower. Hit the 3rd floor and buy something nice (inexpensive) for the mrs.

Just returned from a 4 night trip. I have to warn you, it is extremely hot. The air is so dense, the heat coupled with the sewers and garbage bags on the sidewalks waiting to be picked up makes Manhattan smell pretty bad.
Now that that’s out of the way, there is so much to do you need to prioritize what’s important to you. I had a pretty aggressive bucket list and folks on this board said it was too much, it wasn’t but I was a man on a mission. I’d pick probably 2 touristy things a day and make a plan of attack. Eating out can be expensive, if you are on a budget, pick one nice place a day. I’ll be back in this thread for recommendations

Aside from all the numerous previous posts,,
Do Top of the Rock on day 1 (day, night , or both) , hopefully the weather is clear . It’s the perfect first impression and view of the city if it happens to be your first time and is pretty jaw dropping .
Aside from that, I’ve been a dozen times or more and never got around to walking High Line Park until just last week. I had always wanted to but never made the time. It was well worth it . Just build it in as part of one of your days.
Aside from that, the options are pretty limitless for 4 days, check other threads for more advice on your preferences and goals.

Is it like LA/MS hot or Sahara hot? I'm heading there in 2 weeks and I've been watching the weather. It looks like it's about 5-10 degrees cooler than we are in MS, so yay!

LA/MS hot. Manhattan is like a big sauna in the summer time. The heat is trapped in the city. I’d taxi/uber everywhere if you can.

Just went not too long ago. Check out the high line park. It's nice for a stroll or a jog in the morning or whenever really. If Billy Joel is playing a concert at MSG I recommend getting some tickets. Grand Central Station has a small food market on its lower level that I grabbed some decent crab cakes from. Definitly have a picnic at central park of you can I took a nap and just listened to the city, which was my favorite part of NYC. Check out the WTC/Sept11 museum and memorial. I'd buy tickets in advance so you don't wait in line, same with lady liberty. Also, check out discounts if you are a veteran, I know the WTC museum is free for active duty. Try and grab a lobster roll if you can. Since you have kids I would stay out of L.E.S in the evening. On the Brooklyn side of the bridge you come into a pretty decent area for resturaunts, shopping etc.
