New York City Hotels for families

Traveling soon to NYC. Family of 4. While I realize that most hotels in NYC are going to be rather small for a "standard" size room, which are some that are "larger" for the "standard?" Hoping to be under $400.00 per night, which may not get us very far in terms of nice hotels (willing to bump up, if necessary).
We're planning to do much of the "touristy" things:
Statue of Liberty
9/11 Museum
Empire State Building
Greenwich Village
Central Park
Little Italy
Take in a Broadway Show
Rockefeller Center
Battery Park
Chinatown
Radio City Music Hall
Chelsea Market
St. Patrick's Cathedral
so it appears that we will be "all over" --- location, as long as we are in a safe area - near most everything, we are flexible.
We do have dinner reservations at Il Mulino one evening.
Also, very open to ideas as well ... we have 10 and 13 year old girls --- and eliminating anything from my list that may not be worth our time.

I personally prefer the Marriott Marquis in Times Square. It's convenient to everything. Some rooms with 2 beds even have a small sofa.

I recommend Wyndham on 45th. Couple blocks from Grand Central. Plenty of local eating places nearby as well. It should be in your price range as well. Be warned they will hound you about their timeshares.

We stayed in the Hyatt Centric near Times Square and Broadway in July and it was great for a family. Large room for $275ish. Starbucks and Juniors are within a block for family breakfast choices. We felt very safe there. Have fun!
ETA: Since you listed Broadway shows, I can highly recommend Dear Evan Hansen and Hadestown. Also, off-Broadway comedy The Play that Goes Wrong.

Hilton Garden Inn New York Central Park is a solid choice

I took the wife and 2 kids (7&9) to NYC this past Memorial Day. We stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn Times Square on 8th Ave. It is in the Times Square District, but a couple blocks from Broadway. We had a king bed with a sofa bed. While the room is smaller than your average hotel room, we had no problems with space.
For what you are doing, don't be afraid of "Times Square." I don't get why people recommend not to stay there. It is literally in the middle of Manhattan, so it is close to points North and South. We would go out for the day and do the touristy things on your list and on the way home we would get off of the Subway at 42nd and walk through TS on the way to the hotel. The kids loved seeing it all lit up.
People on here love to shite on "touristy" things, but when you travel- especially to NYC- you're going there to be a tourist. Embrace it and enjoy it!

I'm in NY on a regular basis for work and stay at the Chambers hotel. It is very nice, next to Central Park, and includes Milk Bar breakfast, which is a nice perk that most NY hotels don't have. The rooms are larger than most you will find in the city. Prices are highly variable. I've stayed for as low as $150 and seen it at $700. That will be true for most places in the city.

Should be decent deals staying in Long Island city, which is only a short train ride from Manhattan.

I’ve stayed at a few of the Marriott hotels. The Marquis in Times Square is great but Times Square has become so crowded it’s harder to move there lately. But it’s close to several subway stops, Broadway, and tons of restaurants. Walking distance to many locations too.
The JW Essex is another good one closer to Central Park.

Check out the suites at Hotel Beacon in UWS. We have 2 kids & go every year for Thanksgiving week. The bedroom is separate from the living room & theres a kitchenette. It’s across the street from Trader Joe’s & next to the 72nd street station which has an express to Times Square. You’re within walking distance to the Natural History Museum & Central Park.

There's a Doubletree Suites right in Times Square that is very spacious.

Like others have said, Marriott Marquis in Times Square. We have also stayed at the Crowne Plaza Times Square, it’s not as nice as the Marriott but it has a cheaper room rate. it would be my second choice. Don’t be discouraged by the crowds in TS.
Times Square VIEW rooms are worth the extra money at each hotel.

I took my wife and 3 kids to NY 15 years ago and we stayed at the Double Tree at Times Square. Safe and good price and we had 2 double beds and a pullout couch. Large room. Don't know about it today, but would recommend it based upon several years ago.

The rates will likely be above 400$ depending on when you will be staying but the Kimberly Hotel has 1 bedroom suites with a 'living room' and 2 bedroom suites. Its recently been remodeled--at least part of the rooms. And it has a great rooftop bar.
