Looking for a destination up Ne to do 7/4 and the rest of the week before finishing in NYC. Candidates so far are Burlington, vt, cape cod, Portland , me, or Bristol , ri
I’ve never been to any of them so any insight or other suggestions are welcome.

Abita Fan will comment shortly, but Portland, ME kicked arse.
The Cape will most likely be PACKED, so not sure if you want to deal with the traffic and crowds.
Ive also heard Newport, RI is pretty kickass in the summer.

Newport expensive especially that week
Cape will be too crowded
I would go Maine, anywhere from Portland down to Kennebunk area all have reasonable places to stay with plenty of July 4th entertainment, plus you could do Acadia National Park but it will be crowded
We were in Kennebunk last July 4th, fireworks, a band and a clam/lobster bake.

Kennebunk was awesome. Went for a day last summer. Postcard NE small town.

I would base my plans around what is available this late and what I could afford. Spent many of 4ths on Block Island (RI), Narragsnsett, Newport, Watch Hill (all RI).
Shelter Island and Sag Harbor are great too. I’d be most concerned about avoiding traffic and having a planned place to sleep. Things sell out quickly.

No I won't. You can't tell me what to do.

Thanks for the rec. looked like a challenge getting to Kennebunk but you aren’t the first to suggest it. Sound like we would fly to Boston and take a train up that way to get there?

Honestly, of the places you named, I’d recommend Burlington. As someone mentioned, Newport is going to be EXPENSIVE at that time, and the cape is going to be equally costly and absolutely jam packed.
Burlington and Stowe, VT are two of my favorite places in New England.
Portland, ME would also be good to look into, as you could fly into Boston and take the commuter rail straight there. I absolutely love Portland.
