Must do’s in Houston

Hey y’all, first time posting on this board
(Thought for the longest time it was an OT joke “travel board”)
Looking for must do’s in Houston for me and the fiancé.
We like zoos, museums, aquariums, eating, and nature. I’m a history teacher, so anything in that boat is nice.
I know I can google a lot of this, but nothing is more authentic than real life experiences from members of this board. Looking for the good stuff, stuff that people have found that isn’t as advertised as well

There is a pretty recent thread on the Food Board with some good restaurant recs.
Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Natural Science...it’s summer-it’s hot as fricking balls but I suppose you could head to the zoo.
I think Moody Gardens down in Galveston just revamped their aquarium.
The Astros are kicking arse so a Friday night game with fireworks could be something to do

For art, I really like the Menil Campus which has the Menil Collection Museum, Rothko Chapel (Marc Rothko paintings), Byzantine Fresco Chapel and a permanent Dan Flavin installation. But if you don't like modern art it may not be your cup o' tea.

Menil is closed until late September.

If you’re a history teacher, the holocaust museum should be on your list of things to do.
Also, if military aviation is appealing to you then I’d suggest you guys visit the Lone Star Flight Museum. It’s at Ellington AFB about 15 minutes southeast of Houston. It’s kick arse.
Thread on the flight museum with lots of pics

Eat beef fajitas at Lupe tortilla

Restaurants, museums, Astros, iPics...basically stay inside
However, This time of year will have local art shows at night which are free to walk though
And there is always some event going on or art exhibit. I think there is a sisteen chapel replica happening now. Check whatever musical is in town if that’s your thing or theater district

Zoo is great, but it's hot. They stay open later in the summer so plan for an evening trip.
Discovery Green always has something going on.
Aquarium is a pass but just because it's small and not worth the price.
Natural Science Museum is awesome. You can do this during the day and hit the zoo in the evening as they are right next to each other.
Take a day and go to Galveston and walk the Strand.

Lupe Tortilla is terrible...at least suggest Pappasito's.

I agree most their food isn't great but their fajitas are the best in the city

There is a White Linen Night (copy of the NOLA White Linen Night) in the Heights in August. It's a good time bar-hopping and checking out the galleries.

I've never ate anything there but the beef fajitas. You have lost your mind if you think they aren't excellent.

Look into the butterfly exhibit at the natural science museum. There are a few parts that really cater to children more, but I still enjoyed it.

Must do’s in Houston
Find Air Conditioning.
For me: USS Texas (BB-35), be there first thing in the morning (10:00 AM) when they open.

Their museums are top notch.
They had a baseball exhibit I saw that had some neat things for anything Texas baseball - Astros (old Colt 45's stuff), Rangers, Nolan Ryan memorabilia, college teams, etc.

No one has said NASA?
NASA is fun and parts of it are indoors.
