Msy-cun help for tomorrow 10/25
So I'm flying to Cancun tomorrow and was planning to go on passes but a bunch of people just joined the list using vacation passes bumping me way down on my iah-cun flight.
I'm thinking of getting to Houston or Dallas and buying a ticket on spirit and was wondering if y'all had any better advice.
I'm actually starting at msy and can use passes on United or anerican to get there.

Here to help, we'll figure this out.

I'm starting with American to DFW and seeing the flight loads currently. Out of MSY to DFW, all the morning flights look very booked except for maybe the 8am. Even still they're only selling 1 seat on that flight

Looks like there's 2 seats on the 6:30am out of Baton Rouge to DFW.

United:
Looks like the early 5:40am flight to IAH is good, the remaining flights are actually showing up full except for your 7:02am to IAH.

ETA: Which flight are you on from IAH-CUN? Oh I see, you're on 1012 leaving IAH at 9:13am. 12 on the standby list

Based on what I'm seeing, United has 5 flights tomorrow to CUN. If you take the 5:30am to IAH, you can still try for that 9:13am. If you don't make it, get on United 6041 or 6239 to DFW. 6041 leaves at 7:35am so you'll have to move in IAH, 6239 leaves at 9:40am. No one listed on standby right now and that would get you to DFW in time for the spirit nonstop.

Otherwise, you stay at IAH and pray for misconnects. I'm not sure how the weather is down there tomorrow, but if there's some bad weather some people may not make the connection. I'm always hesitant to book full flights on standby, always take the first flight of the day

Make sure you can get in touch with whoever gave you the buddy pass early tomorrow morning with any issues that come up.

Here's what else I'm seeing, and thanks for the help.
I can buy a spirit ticket from iah-cun for about $255 and would arrive at 3pm
Or I could go to DFW with my buddy contact who is flying dfw-cun as of now on the 9 something am flight which is also overbooked but he will get the jumpseat. If I miss that flight with his priority I could buy a spirit ticket for $76 on the 1230 dfw-cun. But will that price stay there until I know I've missed my dfw-cun American flight

Oh I see you already figured all that out. Should I take the shot in Houston or go Dallas from the start?

I'm pretty sure if I go early I'll get to Houston or Dallas. The no show factor on the first flights out of MSY is pretty good

Go to houston on the 540am, once in IAH recheck the flight loads and either go to DFW from there or wait around IAH all day.

ETA: I'd be worried about standby on any nonstop MSY-DFW on American, they're no longer selling any tickets for the direct flights. Let me know what you end up deciding on. I know those 5:30am flights suck but if it's for vacation I'd take the safest option possible

Used to the 530 flights almost prefer knowing I'm gonna get on. Current and possibly best plan is go Houston and take the four or five shots. I think I'll eventually make it. It's for a wedding Friday at 5 so I got Friday morning flights if I end up camping in iah

Absolutely agree with your decision, the DFW-CUN flights look horrible for standby tomorrow. Hope for misconnects tomorrow morning but I'd say you have a shot at making it tomorrow. Seat map currently at 22 unassigned seats in coach and 6 seats in first for the 9:15am and 18 seats in coach and 2 seats in first for the 10:28am.

No go on the first one to Cancun but I actually got pretty close. Unfortunately a whole new crop of non revs bumped me back down to 13 on the list. Waiting on UA1014 now

You get on 1014 or stuck waiting for 1016? I see 3 people cleared 1014 and theres only 5 waiting for 1016 with 5 seats available

Waiting. Got my name called and almost ticket in hand before one ahead of me came running up.
Funny enough the employee got screwed in DFW and missed his first one. He just got on the jumpseat of the second from there and told me it had one seat empty when it took off. You just never know

Missed 1016 but I'm right on the line. I'll get on the next one unless something crazy happens

Done it all my life so I'm used to it. If you plan right and don't get excited it's really not the worst. Just avoid flying on holidays on passes
