We’re flying out of MSY Thursday at 6am. I know conventional wisdom is arrive 2hrs before flight but does that apply this early? TIA

No. Get there for 5 and you should be good.

If you're not checking a bag, you're good for 5 in my opinion.

I've only flown out of the new MSY once that early and it was a breeze.

But I'm also kind of a basketcase when it comes to flights and I'm always there 1.5 hours at least early and I get through in 5 minutes and am sitting around.

Parking on site with TSA pre and 5 is good

If not, I’d go 4:30

I usually get there 1.5-2 hours early. When I flew out at the end of January though Delta decided not to staff the desk till 5 so there was a massive line waiting to check bags. If you don't have to check bags you should be fine with 5, especially if you have precheck.

Ask me how I figured this one out... What a pain in the arse. I will take sitting around an airport an extra hour rather than an extra 8

We are checking bags but we’re flying southwest and they have the kiosks. We used them back in October and it was very quick process. Also, we’re taking a Lyft, Uber or cab so we won’t have to deal with parking.

Don't expect to get more than a cup of coffee at that time of the morning....and even coffee will be limited.

We had a 5:25 AM flight with Southwest to Orlando (Disney) 2 years ago (old terminal) and arrived at 4:00 AM. Took us an hour to get through checking our bags and another 30 minutes to get through security (only because others let us go through) and they luckily let us get on the plane.

We recently had a 5:00 AM flight and TSA didn’t even begin screening until 4:00 AM. We checked a bag but, that was really easy and took like 5 minutes.

I flew out of MSY on Southwest this past Sunday at 6:10 am. Arrived around 4:50-5.

The line to check bags was an absolute shitshow and took probably 30-40 minutes to finally get through. There are two lines for SW, neither of which were clearly marked and essentially commingled with the hordes of people until you figured it out for yourself - one line for the kiosks checking in/printing tags, and the other for dropping off the luggage at baggage check. I do remember looking behind around 5:20 and seeing the line nearly going to the entrance doors outside.

Security is pretty fluid but took 10-15 minutes. With that, 4:30 should be good, 4:45 at the latest. God speed.

I really appreciate all the responses. I’ll report back if I have any useful info after our experience tomorrow.

I've found that security in general at MSY has been a breeze, even for non-TSA pre-check. I think I actually made it through the normal line faster than someone I was flying with who was in the pre-check line once.

I’m flying SW this Saturday and this is some good info. My flight is at 7:20am and planning to get there around 6 but now I’m leaning 5:30. I’m flying with my 3 year old son and 6 month old daughter so this should be fun

Thanks again to everyone. This info was so helpful. We got dropped off at 4:40 and this places is packed. It’s 5:06 and we’re almost to the front of the security line now. The southwest kiosk thing was very unorganized. Make sure you just go straight to the kiosk, then get in line to check your bag.

Leaving for a flight at 6:25AM this morning and the SWA bag check area is an absolute disaster. I’d give myself an extra 30 min to deal with this situation if leaving MSY on SWA in early AM. Fortunately gave myself a 2 hour lead time so this won’t be an issue but I can see it being a real problem for someone traveling with golf clubs or kids having to check begs and only giving an hour or so lead time.

When I fly Southwest with my wife and daughter I usually drop them off with our checked bags then I got park the truck and come back with our carry-on's.

They know the damn flight schedule and know how many passengers to expect yet treat the check-in process like Wal Mart the Saturday before Christmas with 8 registers open.

I’ve been following this topic....
What’s everyone’s best guess for 6am Easter Sunday departures? Busy due to holiday or not busy due to holiday?

Initially planned to use US park but with that early of a departure I may stick to long term parking so I don’t have to rely on quick shuttle transportation.
