Emerald Lake

Generally, a lot of folks go there from Skagway, AK. We did a different tour, but my parents went on the White Pass Yukon Railroad into the Yukon and came back by a small bus/van (like 12 people max). They stopped at Emerald Lake on the way back to the cruise port in Skagway. People also rent cars in Skagway and tour into the Yukon on their own.

It's truly beautiful up there if you've never been to Alaska. The Alaskan cruise is a really great multigenerational family trip because there are activities for everyone from kids (elementary age is best) up to older seniors.

Emerald Lake up in the Yukon might be the most unusual/stunning I've seen in person:

There's a bunch of them along the Alaska BC border that look similar. Just inaccessible without a lot of effort.

I lived in Skagway for a season and drove to Whitehorse YT to shop. That lake and the Carcross Desert made the trip unique.

Sky Pond is another good hike

And Lake Louise mentioned earlier are on my bucket list. I'm not currently in good enough shape for Sky Pond as it's a pretty strenuous hike. It's about 9 miles round trip with an elevation gain of over 1,500 ft and starting at a pretty high elevation as well.

Skagway is just a unique little town, nothing like it. Much of downtown is National Park, surrounded by 5-6k peaks, on the sea...

There's a lot of alpine lakes on the CHilkoot pass side. Once you hike over the border, there's an incredible number of lakes above treeline.

Highly recommend the Chilkoot Trail, catch the train back to Skagway.

I have also been to Emerald Lake as part of the White Pass Yukon Railroad tour. It was pretty. The scenery was spectacular all that day.

Ya these lakes have become "my thing" in the last year or so. Want to do a Northern Italy to Slovenia trip to see a bunch.

Do you have a coordinate for the Emerald lake you linked?

I have one saved but it's in BC near Banff. You seem to be referring to another one

Bled was very cool. Not the "coolest alpine lake" I've seen, but cool.

Lake Bohinj is Slovenia’s largest glacial lake. I thought it was more "spectacular".

At least the places I've been, I'd agree with Emerald Lake. Stayed in the spectacular Emerald Lake Lodge!

Single most though might be Moraine Lake. Didn't stay there but the Lodge was spectacular.

Train used to go all the way to Whitehorse. Its also a whistle stop for hikers on the Chilkoot Trail (the train that goes to Lake Bennett) and the Denver and Laughton Glaciers.

Even the finger lakes at the top of the White Pass where the train turns aren't bad.

History of that area is fascinating.

We're scheduled to go this November/December to Germany, Czechia and Austria. Haven't been, but Hallstatt looks spectacular. May end up there and/or Salzburg. Maybe Graz.

On a side note, really hope I can catch a " Krampus Night or Krampusnacht" somewhere in Austria, typically around December 5th, to see Saint Nick's evil sidekick in action! LINK

Is that ice stairway actually still in place for the adventurous? The stories from back in the day are crazy.

The end is tricky. It’s no longer hiking. You are climbing rocks. And the falling water doesn’t help

Yep. There are some collapsible canoes near the top of the pass. Some stuff people ended up leaving behind. A typical miner would have had to made that trip twenty times (or pay a packer) to be cleared by the Canadians to travel through.

Ya, Hallstatt always looked cool to me. I had read that place was getting overcrowded too so good year to go.

Some places can be crowded and not be a big deal and others would be miserable.

re: Most beautiful alpine lakes
How about some lakes in the Alps?

I have been to Lucerne twice. The scenery is spectacular with Lake Lucern in the foreground and the snow covered Alps in the background. The best view was from the old Hotel Goetsch (sp?) which was on a hill overlooking the town. We spent hours in their glass walled bar marveling at the scenery.

Also spectacular was Lake Brienz near Interlaken. It was beautiful, with the aqua waters of the lake surrounded by snow capped mountains.

Hard to beat that area. Lucerne to Interlaken to Grindelwald is all incredible.

I don't know what truly falls under the definition of an alpine lake, but enjoyed some great lakes in Glacier last week:
