Mexico Carrying Pesos

Will be traveling to Tulum. Is it a bad idea to bring several thousand USD worth of pesos with me? Should I instead only bring a limited amount of pesos and exchange down there as needed?

Why take that much cash? When we go to Isla for 10 days we only take about $1100 US in Pesos.

How much would you budget for 2 people on honeymoon for 8 nights between food, alcohol, and activities?

I'd recommend using a credit card if at all possible. Those with more experience in Tulum ca n speaker better bout I'd think $200-$250 a day would be adequate unless you're paying resort prices for drinks. Drinks are generally pretty cheap in Mexico (except for Cabo San Lucas). Maybe someone else will chime in.
Congrats on your upcoming nuptials and best of luck in your lives together.

I've read most places in tulum don't accept credit cards.

Cash is definitely king in Tulum, but places like the cenotes, Mayan ruins and almost all of the decent beach bars accepted cards. Most restaurants on the other hand, did not.
....that being said, I would only bring about 1000usd in pesos. Just too risky to bring much more.

Where are y’all staying btw? Tulum is incredible. Such beautiful beaches and great food.

It’s a worse idea simply to travel to Tulum.

If only bringing $1000 usd in pesos, what's the best way to pick up more? I've read I can just use my debit card at an ATM

Im going to Tulum in May and was thinking about the same thing. Not many places take credit cards. I am going Tues-Sat and I will be bringing about $600 US or about 11,000 Pesos before I go and then get what I need via a "reputable" ATM if I run out.

Yes just be careful about certain ATM's. I've read to use Tulum Chedraui ATM or CLBanco in Tulum which exchanges USD to Pesos.

Is a rate of 16.71 pesos per USD fair at my bank in America?

No. Use a Banamex atm in Mexico. You will get around 18.

Well I wanted to get some pesos in advance, that was the rate at Hancock Whitney who I have an account with.
ETA1: Is my bank going to give me that crappy rate on all ATM withdrawals in Mexico in addition to ATM fees? Or is the rate from a Mexico ATM based on that bank in Mexico?
ETA2: After talking with Whitney, there is only a $2 ATM service fee with the exchange rate being set by the Mexican bank.

You will get the rate that international banks charge each other which is close to the rate it is trading at end of day and a $2 ATM charge.

I've travelled in Mexico a lot, and I was in Tulum last month.
1) Don't even think about carrying that much cash with you in Mexico. Ever. Forget that idea.
2) ATMs are plentiful in Tulum. Most places also accept USD and major American credit cards (VISA, MC, etc). Bring your debit card and two credit cards (one for backup). Notify your bank before you go. Withdraw cash as needed.
3) Bring about $200-300 USD in cash for emergencies. MAX. That should get you and your family back to the airport in a bind.

Maybe that used to be the case, but things have changed. The place has Americanized. Many of the nicer hotels, restaurants, and shops take credit cards.
