Decided to take last minute trip to Madrid during Mardi Gras week. This board has always been spot on with suggestions, so any restaurant recs or things/places to not miss? Taking day trip to Toledo, and have a food tour scheduled. We’ll be staying in the Salamanca neighborhood. Gracias

Do the popular things like going walk through all the famous plazas (Mayor, del Sol, Cibeles), and go see the Prado (lines were kind of long when I went). If you are in to sports, even if not soccer, I would take a tour of the Santiago Bernabeu, and if Real or Atletico are playing home I would catch a game. The Palacio was a fun tour. The Azotea del Circulo was awesome for a sunset and some drinks.

I enjoyed walking around Mercado de San Miguel with sangria and eating tapas, and had some great food at Mercado de San Ildefonso.

Those recs are pretty touristy, but Madrid is an amazing city, and one of my favorite in the world.

I was in Madrid last year, personally, I was not crazy about it at all, however...

We ate at two restaurants that were among the best we have eaten at in Spain.

StreetXO
Sala de Despiece

Both were spectacular, very modern tapas. StreetXO does not take reservations and the line gets long. Very long. The Spanish love lines.

Sala De Despiece does take some limited reservations, but all for this side room that. You will not get the atmosphere of the main room, but you also won't have to wait in line.

Not sure on which food tour you are doing, but Devour was great in both Madrid and San Sebastian.

Make sure to stop by Mercado de San Miguel. Touristy but you get to see a little bit of everything and everything we had there was good.

The Mercado is cool. Tons of people but you can eat any kind of tapa you can imagine there.

We did a flamenco dancing show while we were there. It was a nice diversion.

There are walking tours you can download to your phone which are free and it's a nice way to see the city at your pace.

We loved Madrid. We'll be spending a few days there in May on our trip to Spain.

Real Madrid have a Champions League (Huge competition) match at home on Ash Wednesday.

Doubt you could get tickets, but definitely soak up the experience.
