We are going in June. Our trip last summer was cancelled due to Covid. A place that’s nice and safe but not a huge resort.

Wailea?

Andaz is my favorite. It's smaller than the nearby Fairmont, Four Seasons, etc.

We usually rent a condo. The Grand Wailea/Fairmont/Four Seasons etc are pretty big. If you don't need to be directly on the beach but still really close, there's a new Residence Inn up the hill from the Shops at Wailea.

Residence Inn

We have stayed at the Fairmont for the last 20 years - love it there - multiple pools and the little dining shack at the pool is great - only downside is no beach service - you have to be on the grass - last time we upgraded into one of the beach front villas - highly recommend

So you use AirBnb or VRBO and rent a condo in a complex?

Yes. The past couple of times we've rented at Grand Champions which is near the Residence Inn I linked. It's where we want to be (Wailea/Kihei), but no view. Wailea Ekahi is more expensive but you can get great views there. The condos on Kihei Rd are older and there's more traffic, but you can find nicely remodeled ones. I narrow my searches to places with a washer and dryer and a/c in the unit.

Washer and dryer is a must for us too. We will be there 10 days.

It's been two years ago now, but I stayed in a condo in Kihei right across the road from the whale observatory and it was nice. There's even access to a small beach right across the road.

Bump

Anyone been to Maui recently? I’ve put off booking until now. Kihei area looks to be where we will stay.

Plenty of condos in that area on the beach to choose from.

We stayed at a VRBO at Kamaole Sands. May be a bit large per your preference, but we were pleased nonetheless. Let me know if you’d like me to link the VRBO page.

Yes I’ve seen that condo group advertises. Sure go ahead and post the link, please.

It's getting pretty expensive. We just back (used Hyatt points to stay at Wailea Ekolu). Rental cars are insane and in short supply. I've never seen prices so high in eleven years of going.

ETA: hopefully restrictions ease, but if you are a tour person or want to dine out, you are going to need to plan. Things get booked. We just go and veg on the beach

Heading to Honolulu at the end of May, tickets were not bad as for two people about 700 a ticket with taxes and hotels were cheap.

Looking forward to it even though as of right now we can't visit other islands and have to show a negative test within 72 hours

Just booked Andaz for late April-early May. Was hoping to go to Kauai too but the logistics of getting a test within 72 hours seem impossible to guarantee on Maui. Found some local rental car places that were reasonably priced vs the big boys. Any recs on tour companies? Hate to make plans this early but guess I'll have to.

Thanks.
It’s rented for our dates but I will likely book in the same condo complex.

We finally booked a place in Kihei. Now I’m asking for recommendations on must-see/do activities.

I know we will do the Road to Hana via a tour, and we will do a snorkeling excursion. Other activities could be a brewery tour as well as a round of golf for me and a spa treatment for the wife.

Any recommendations on these activities would be appreciated.

<----Interned in Donaldsonville, LA

It was more like an internment, upon reflection.

Bruddah Hutts in Hana has the best bbq of all the places I tried. Someone here mentioned it. Get there by noon or the ribs might be all gone.

Black sand beach is a must stop for me. Big breakers and I just bob up and down in the surf.

If you snorkel the molokini crater they go to what they call turtle town after the crater.

If you enjoy swimming with the turtles you can do it again and again if you rent snorkel gear.

Makena landing park is where you go. That is turtle town. At the end of the parking lot there's a spot made for turtles to rest so you can see them on land and in the water.

Makena beach might be my favorite beach on the island. Big breakers if you like that.

South Maui Fish Company has the best Poke on the Island. Expect a line and get there early. The grilled marlin was ridiculously amazing.

Maui brewing is a nice place. Almost too nice they have great stuff on tap that you can only get there.

Kohola brewery in Lahaina is more my style.

I've got more that I'll add later.
