NYC to require vaccine for indoors

quote:

New York City will become the first major U.S. city to require proof of COVID-19 vaccination at restaurants, gyms and other businesses, Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Tuesday, as the nation grapples with the rapidly spreading Delta variant.

quote:

New York City's policy requires proof of at least one dose and will be enforced starting Sept. 13. Like mask mandates and last year's stay-at-home orders, the plan will likely meet stiff resistance.

In France, government imposition of a nationwide health passport proving vaccination has touched off large protests, often dispersed by police using tear gas.

We have had a long planned trip to NYC for the wife and myself, had to postpone 3 times so far, it's planned for the week after Christmas right now.

It's NYC so if any place has a chance of it sticking, it's there. The whole enforcement sounds like a shitshow, also it makes me wonder will NYC even decorate for Christmas this year, will they skip it in an effort to prevent crowds?

I'd say pretty good chance, but it depends on what case and hospitalization numbers do between now and then. Still, they're relying on the businesses to enforce it, so who knows how that will shake out. Being NYC, I'd imagine most places will try to enforce it, but there will be several that are more lax with it or just plain ignore it.

If it's a big concern, I'd just get vaccinated if you haven't already, or postpone it again.

Proof of vax will be as simple as showing a phone app by then. The merchants will want a simple, no-line process. Show your ticket, show you vax. You're in.

If it were me I would flip NY the bird and go somewhere else. Hard to speculate what or why they will be doing what they will be doing by then.

We live part-time in NYC in SoHo... few answers to your questions:

quote:

odds the vaccine passport sticks?

- Through the end of the year? Likely. The residents here are virtually all vaccinated and it's seen as the "path of least resistance" to keeping masks off indoors (not mandated indoors except the subway). Further, as the demand for entertainment (sports, bars, clubs, restaurants, etc...) remain sky-high with attached FOMO, there's not going to be any attrition in consumers because of it. Considering the winter months was the big COVID spike we all expected last year, I imagine that it will hold serve until next January/February.

quote:

The whole enforcement sounds like a shitshow

Sorta... I mean, they were able to enforce the limited seating rule last year rather well and some pretty famous spots like "House of Yes" got shut down and penalized pretty hard for not abiding by COVID protocol. NYC has a pretty awesome police force - enforcement isn't that hard with the money they throw around.

quote:

also it makes me wonder will NYC even decorate for Christmas this year

They absolutely will. Heck, they did last year when the city was 80% empty. It was kind of like the "flickering light of hope" some days haha. It's beautiful and absolutely worth seeing.

quote:

prevent crowds

Crowds by no means are discouraged. Giants/Jets plan on having 75K in the stands in September, and MSG has been 100% since the Knicks were in the playoffs.

Again, most of the folks that are rich enough to afford this kind of stuff are vaxxed, so demand isn't falling off.

Good thing it doesn’t start this weekend so I can get through LGA and back home.

My understanding is that they totally forgot to make an exception for kids under 12 who can't be vaccinated, so kids are effectively banned from public life unless they fix that.

Some places were already preemptively banning kids under 12. Pretty messed up.

Just an FYI if anyone reading is traveling with kids there soon.

Thank you, that's some good info!

I was worried if we end up going that NYC won't be normal NYC at Christmas, we wanted to be there just for that. I know it probably won't be a normal year, but if the tree is up and they decorate, I can deal with the masks and everything else, it will be cold after all.

Agreed. I'd plan on 100% they will be requiring the passport.

I would almost guarantee you are required to show proof of vaccine for most indoor functions in NYC through early next year.
