Leaving for NYC in a few days. Advice?
Posted by LordSaintly on 7/15/21 at 8:51 pm00
Me and the Mrs are heading to NYC for a week. What are some can’t-miss activities? Some things are probably obvious, but I always enjoy this board’s insight.
I welcome your advice on attractions, restaurants, and other ways to entertain ourselves. We are pretty open to anything.

Is this your first time in NYC? Where are you staying? Double check what is open with COVID, and I haven't been since 2019, I think.
These are the recs I throw out to TD, friends, or family...
Pizza:
- John's of Bleecker St Pizza. My favorite pizza without a doubt. Times Square location doesn't really compare. There are dozens/hundreds of pie spots all dependent on the neighborhood you're in. Walk over to Blind Tiger for a beer before. Really cool beer bar.
- Joe's West Village for quintessential NY slice
- Prince St
Bars:
- Blind Tiger (mentioned above)
- Dead Rabbit - cocktail bar downtown. Very cool place.
- Please Don't Tell - plan in advance but real cool speakeasy
Romantic dinner in West Village. Few places I've enjoyed: L'Artusi, Don Angie, Little Owl, Babbo
Grab a bagel. Ess-a-bagel was a classic. Murray's or Brookyln bagel you can't go wrong with. Tons of options I don't even know about kinda like pizza above. Everyone will have their spot.
Places:
- Museum of Natural History
- MET - grab a drink on the rofftop bar overlooking Central Park if it's nice out.
- Governor's Island. Army post from American Revolution that's turned into a massive park.
- 911 WTC Museum. Buy tickets ahead so you dont stand in line.
- Tenement Museum. Highly recommend. More intimate tour guide through an original tenement house detailing immigrants experiences when they first arrived in NYC.
- Top of Empire State Building or Top of the Rock
- Rent bikes and bike Central Park
- Comedy Cellar. Ray Romano showed up when I went.
- Ellis Island
- Walk Brooklyn Bridge. I've walked day and night and enjoyed the night walk most.

I traveled there 10 years ago but I was only there for a few hours. We're staying near Central Park.
Thank you for the detailed post though. We're keeping an eye on the COVID situation.

No problem, have a great time.
I meant to add JG Melon in the Upper East . One of the best burgers I've had in my life. Thick pub style burgers prepared very simply, with a side of cottage fries. Maybe I have a personal attachment, but it's my go to.
I'll try to add anything else I can remember.

Don’t forget to bring cash.
The thing I miss most about living in NYC is grabbing antipasto from a fancy UES store, set up shop on Cedar Hill below 79th, and crush a bottle of wine as life goes by.

Empire State observation, 9/11 Memorial, Tavern on the Green, Central Park, Times Square, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Guggenheim Museum of Art, John's Pizzeria, Greenwich Village wine tasting tour, double decker bus tour of Manhattan..not bad, open on top, Euro tourists stare up in amazement. Few suggestions

Are you and your wife “foodies”? I hate that term but you know what I mean.
See if you can get into Le Coucou for dinner one night. Absolutely outstanding meal there.

I would do much more than this. If there is somewhere you want to go I'd check their hours and call/ message them to confirm. I don't know about NYC at all, but in general there's still many places especially with restaurants with reduced hours or days open. Would suck to go somewhere normally open 7 days a week for lunch and dinner not open on Mondays for lunch or whatever.

We definitely love food. We’ll check it out.

Definitely. We’ve been burned before during COVID so we’re definitely going to call places before going. I don’t trust their websites to be updated.

We’ll consider the comedy clubs. Hadn’t thought of that actually.

Not going to try to compete with fatcats list, but I'll add that you should stop into McSorley's for a couple beers if in the area. The sawdust floors, gravity poured beers its just a throw back thats cool to stop into.

I’ve never been to Mcsorley’s but always wanted to check it out. See, there’s always something better than my list

Empire State observation
I personally would not recommend.
Top of the Rock observation is way better with perfect views of Central Park on one side and views of downtown on the other. You can actually see picture perfect view of the Empire State Building rather than being in it.
Consider High Line park. I only just went there for first time a couple years back. Cool walk on converted old elevated subway line. Nice views and they have small little cafes and beer or coffee and such on the lower to mid side of the park.

Family member just got back. They did ton’s of stuff. Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum, lots of restaurants and bars open.
I’d do Museums above, including Natural History Museum. Guggenheim is ok. Not too big so quick to see. No shows open til September.
Not sure about Ellis Island and Statue of Liberty. Those are great if open.
Cruise from the mid west side on a boat around Manhattan at night is awesome.

New York in One Day Guided Sightseeing Tour; $89.
This is not the hop on/off buses that the touts are pushing in Times Square. It is a 5 star rated guided tour via a small bus and a boat that will take you to most of the highlights of the city without having to pound the pavement and ride trains forever. Lasts from about 10 am to 4 pm, with a stop for lunch.
It's a great way to start the trip and get the lay of the land. If you see things you want more of, you can make a longer visit later.
We also did a Harbor Lights cruise ($41; 2 hours or so), even though we had seen the Statue of Liberty via boat on the first tour. Seeing the statue, the bridges, and the city skyline at night was well worth it. Very memorable.
McSorley's and Dead Rabbit mentioned above are great. Add to the list Fraunces Tavern, a bar and restaurant at 54 Pearl Street. George Washington bade farewell to his officers there after wrapping up the Revolutionary War. I had lunch there and then walked to The Dead Rabbit for a drink.
KFC in Korea Town at Turntable Chicken Jazz. Cool place.
Jimmy's Corner for a drink after you run out of money. A dive bar near Times Square with boxing memorabilia and what has to be the cheapest beer in town. Jimmy Glenn, a former trainer and cutman, was the owner. Covid killed him, so he won't be there.
Katz”s Deli pastrami sandwich was one of the best things I ever ate.
Russ and Daughters was also good for some Jewish grub.
Went in the Hello Deli for a Dr. Pepper, and Rupert Jee himself sold it to me.

don't go!

Guggenheim is great. When there are no shows they display all the big dogs from their collection. If you have an extra day, The Cloisters is also very nice if you enjoy that type of art. The Breuer is ...interesting; they have stuff that does not normally get displayed by prominent museums.
If you have the coin and want an awesome experience, book a NY Media Boat tour. I think it’s the best thing you can do as a tourist in NYC when it’s warm. It’ll cover the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island without having to deal with people or actually going to the islands.
