Balsam Mountain campground in the GSM National Park.

If you're feeling adventurous, there's a hike in only hotel, https://www.lecontelodge.com/, at the top of the mountain. Takes all day to hike up to it. They bring groceries and supplies up every week with a pack of llamas.

Per the latest CDC recommendations, the National Park Service and GSMNP have reinstituted mask wearing requirements in all federal facilities, including LeConte Lodge, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status, for federal facilities in areas of “substantial” or “high” transmission.
All individuals over the age of two who are NOT yet FULLY VACCINATED must wear masks inside all public buildings at LeConte Lodge, as well as outdoor spaces where physical distancing cannot be maintained.

Interesting place, but looks like I'll have to wait a while before going....

We tent camped at Balsam Mountain one year. It was right before they closed for the season.

I remember it not only because it was a great place and beautiful (when it didnt rain), i listened to the AU-MSU 3-2 game on the radio.

We booked a few nights at Foster Falls. Looks to be quite a few trails in that area

I’ve stayed there before. It’s quite the experience. The hike in is no slouch.

OP, I’d recommend a place way off the beaten path called Fires Creek in Hayesville, NC. It’s one of our favorite places for setting up a base camp and then hiking around. If you follow the main road almost 15 miles in, you can camp near a waterfall with a trail not far that will take you up to a ridge overlooking the tiny town of Andrews. It’s kind of a local secret.

Just put in for the Leconte Lodge 2022 reservation lottery. If I get it and that shite’s still in place…

WOW

Thank you for this recommendation.
My girlfriend and I stayed at Foster Falls for 3 nights. We hiked Fiery Gizzard from the north trail head. We hiked 11 miles making the biggest loop we could to Ravens point and back. Awesome hike.
Next time we will start at the Falls end and hike to the north end. We did not do it this time due to taking the chance on a ride back to the campground There is a number you can call and the local will bring you back. We just did not bother with that this time.

We did hike down to the falls which was very nice. Swam a bit, Very Cold.

We also hiked Dennys Cove not far away. Shorter hike but the end of the trail was an amazing waterfall that we had all to ourselves. Great hike. The bluff trail here was also very cool along the rock climbing wall.

Fierry Gizzard trail is a must for anyone looking for a great hike with spectatular views. Waterfalls, creek bottoms to follow, Lots of rocks....LOTS, overviews, and a ridge to hike along. Well worth the trip.

Glad you enjoyed it. It's a great trail and one I need to get back on before too long.

Y’all climb anything down n Fosters? Hiking up the river is my favorite thing to do in that gorge…besides the steep sport climbs. Some shockingly hard climbs in there.

We didn’t climb the climbers wall but we hiked along it.

We put in about 18 miles between three hikes there while staying at foster falls campground.

Fun hike did that one a bunch training for a goruck. Wish I could still do those without destroying what’s left of my back.
