We land at 9:40 am on a Friday this March. There is an 11:08 direct train to Florence that I’d like to catch if possible. Do you think that’s a possibility with me landing at 9:40? We will be checking luggage. Not familiar with the airport or train set up at all.

Also is it easy to just buy tickets on site. I hate to buy ahead of time if I Might possibly miss train. TIA

You can def make it. I would hire a private driver to meet you at airport and assist you in getting bags and heading out. No need most times to be train tix ahead of time. Safe travels

That’s probably close to impossible but good luck

You have to take the train that takes you from the airport to the train station sometimes that line for this train can me quite long and you may have to wait for a second train before you can board

And that Station(the main train station) is huge, if you’ve never been it’s takes a bit to get it figured out, once you get your tickets it may be a 15 min walk to your platform

Even taking a private car instead of taking the train to the main terminal I still think it’s too close to get it done. Isn’t it about a 25 minute car ride without any traffic? Plus they need time to get their luggage first.

There's got to be a whole lot of trains from Rome to Florence everyday, no?

I've never been to Rome so take this for what little its worth, but I would say that's too close and not to buy tickets. Usually the 9:30-10:30 slot is very busy for customs, are you flying in from the states or from Europe? Because you will have to get off the plane and those big planes it could be a 15 minutes. Then get your luggage, then go through customs, etc. It could be easily an hour before you are out of the airport.

But what I came to say, what I would do is simply to grab an expresso and a lunch at the Rome Train station and take your time. Enjoy your vacation. Don't push yourself and stress right on your arrival.

The only possible chance you have is if you land early and are flying in business.

If I remember the train correctly it slows to a crawl passing a school on the way. Will be funny to see your blood pressure at that moment.

As someone else mentioned, take the next train and enjoy the vacation.

Yes, customs...passport control can be way worse than getting your luggage. I have waited for 2 hours to get through passport control at Heathrow and Madrid. But Ive also sailed through....its a crap shoot.

I like your style Baldona. Think I will take my time.

Part of me wants to fit everything in but I know it's unrealistic. Starting to figure that out more and more as I plan this trip. Need to enjoy it and get over the FOMO. Will do. Thx everyone.

What airport? Details ;)

But no. No chance. You likely won’t ever arrive on time, let alone get thru passport control.

Also, since you opened it up, what’s your planned vacation ?

Just trust me, it’s goung to take you 45 minutes at least after you have your bags in hand to get to the front door of the train station probably closer to an hour (it’s 20 miles away through a major metropolis)

And then it’s huge and difficult to understand and the people are not overly helpful (unlike everywhere else in italy,I absolutely love the people) but at the termini in Rome everyone is in a rush or tired and you are a nuisance

IMO, you will never make it on time. You are relying on everything going perfectly (plane shows up on time, bags get to baggage claim quickly, fly through customs, no traffic to train station, etc.) to be able to make it. Last time I flew to Rome, it was an hour and a half before I got through customs, but they were taking their time with our bags, then we had to wait in line at customs.

The fastest way to get from the airport to Termini station is taking the Leonardo Express. It is quick, 30 minutes. However, it leaves every 30 minutes so if you don't make it right on time, you may wait a little time.

It'll be tough. If you weren't checking bags you could possibly make it. With bags I'm not so sure.

Edit: honestly I brainfarted and didn't even think about customs. No way in hell. Make the train for Noon at the earliest. Termini is huge and has tons of food options if you have to wait a few minutes.

What is your itinerary overall? Can you spend a day or two in Rome before heading to Florence?

There is simply no way you can taxi, deplane, make it through customs, find train/car service, get to train station, get tickets, in 1h28m.

FYI, between Italo (private) and Trenitalia, there are trains to Florence like every few minutes.

I preferred Italo if it was an option.

Termini station is HUGE and a total clusterfrick.

I’ve been there done that. It’s nice to be the couple that grab an Asperol Spritz at the airport bar by customs at 10:40 am celebrating being in Italy and waiting for the line to shrink, rather than the couple yelling at each other to hurry because they are stressed out at making something on their schedule. Lol.

People watching with a beer and relaxed watching a bunch of people stressed out is a good time.

Agree—slow down, get an espresso or two in the airport, and take your time. Enjoy being there, and stop trying to turn vacation into a pit crew style minutely Timed experience.

Slow down and get an espresso?

Sorry hungryone, that made me chuckle. I do agree with the slow down aspect. They can take a snooze on the train. 8-)

Ah, but taking the time to drink two will slow you a bit. And the caffeine jolt always helps w jet lag.
