Going to be spending a day in Charleston with a four year old. We’ll be going to the beach prior to Charleston, so we’ll probably stick to the city.

Suggestions?

The aquarium there is pretty nice. If I remember it has a touch tank for the little ones.

Further out, both the old Charlestown historic site and Magnolia Plantation have small animal collections/petting zoos. Magnolia has both a nature tram and a boat ride where you can see some pretty big alligators and bird life.

The Yorktown aircraft carrier at Patriots Point has a nice collection of airplanes, but the cool part of seeing inside the shops may be lost on a 4 y/o.

Children’s Museum of the Low Country. Haven’t been there, just Googled family activities in Charleston. It had good reviews.

The aquarium is good.

The best part of going to Fort Sumpter for a 4 year old is probably the boat ride.

What beach are you coming from? There may be some activities for a 4 year old on the way to Charleston.

Beaches of Jacksonville, FL. Visiting friends that live there then driving up through Savannah.

Aquarium is very kid friendly.

There is a turtle hospital there that’s cool. They give a little education about what they do and open the floor to questions. In another spot, they have a volunteer diver in the big tank and the kids play a game and ask questions in there. Then there’s an area where you get to pet sand sharks, sting rays, and some other creatures that I can’t remember.

Also, if the little one is into airplanes, tour the USS Yorktown aircraft carrier. They have a bunch of old fighter planes that you can climb on and sit in the cockpit.

One can be done in the morning and one in the afternoon easily.

Got nothing coming from the south
If you were coming from the north; Myrtle Beach area, there is a small zoo at Brookgreen Gardens which is just south of Murrels Inlet. A 4 year old would like it.

Coming up 17 from Florida, you'll pass within 25-30 minutes of Edisto Island, before you get to Charleston. Edisto Serpentarium is a lot of fun for kids.
I know you might be all beached out, but right down from there is Botany Bay. One of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever see. It's a graveyard type beach with the trees in the water, and you're not allowed to take anything from the beach, so it's covered with shells.
Get some pics of the kids playing on the canons at The Battery, go for a walk around The Market, King St and the College of Charleston campus, and Fort Moultrie is easier to get to than Fort Sumter. Charles Towne Landing is alright to spend a few hours walking around looking for the animals.
If you can't fill a week with stuff to do in Charleston, you aren't trying.
