And it was fricking awesome. At no point did we feel unsafe, threatened, in harms way etc..
and we took the bus up and down the city.
Also took the ferry to Isla Mujeres and rented a golf cart and toured the island. Found a zipline, snorkel spot off the path and barhopped every little spot we could find. Every single local was extremely welcoming and the Tecate light was less than $1 a bottle and the fish tacos were damn near orgasmic. Of course the prices were more at the resort we stayed in (Westin Lagunamar) but when you venture out its a lot cheaper.

Isla is my little slice of heaven in Mexico. Can’t wait for my next trip down there.

Going to Tulum in a few weeks can't wait.

We haven't made the trip yet. We leave Monday. I'll do my best, but I suck at photography. I tend to want to enjoy the moment and not document it, but I'll try.

Go down to Punta Sur and walk the trails down at the ocean. It really shows you the power of the sea. Then turn left leaving Punta Sur and hit The Joint for breakfast mojitos and some food.

i live in Dallas and am 20 minutes from DFW airport. I can go from gate to beach in 3 hours.
2 hour direct flight, same time zone, the resort area is 10 minutes from the airport. Its the perfect turn key getaway
I have friends who do exotic beach getaways and have two layovers and spent 8-10 hours traveling, just to sit on a beach and drink a fruity drink. Cancun does the trick for me!

Agreed. We did Cancun for our budget honeymoon in 2011 and it was one of the coolest vacations ever. All-inclusive, airfare, everything added up was still cheaper than a long weekend in Destin. You just have to find the deals. With all the resorts there competing, someone always has a deal going. And even from ATL it's only 3 hour flight, direct, and even dealing with security and checking in etc is still less time than driving to the panhandle.
And as said, you can day trip to Isla Mujares without paying the premium to stay there.

Were security forces / the Federales apparent? I am curious as to the situation, I have traveled fairly extensively and was taking the rumors of Cartel activity with a grain of salt up until the ferry bombing and the official US DOS Travel Advisory. That got my attention. I traditionally travelled to Playa Del Carmen but that is pretty much a no-go zone right now according to DOS. Are there resorts on Isla Mujeres? Or is it best to stay in Cancun and day trip over?
Sorry for the ignorant questions but I know nothing about Cancun. Never went there in HS or college and have stuck to Playa as an adult. I am missing my beach vacation and need one soon. TIA.

What resort would this be? Looking for something all-inclusive for a quick trip with the wife.

You recommend staying in Isla or Cancun? I'm looking for a quick long weekend trip and thought about going since you all speak so highly of it.

I'd stay on Isla. A warning though. It's a chill, laid back island. Drinks and food are cheap and Playa Norte is beautiful. For me, it's my decompression spot because my work days tend to be at 900 miles an hour.
This isn't to say that you can't have a good time and a little nightlife on Hidalgo Street.

If you have time, Akumal is only about 15 miles north of Tulum and they have a public beach that always has sea turtles swimming there. If you go, there will be locals telling you have to rent life jackets from them and all kinds of BS. We bring our own snorkel gear and swimming pool noodles in the suitcase to float around on. Here's a video from the last time we went.

That's what I'm looking for. Someplace laid back, chill and a place I can decompress for a few days.

Isla is it then. Stay at Hotel Secreto. Tell Victor you’re a friend of Jefe’s and he’ll take care of you.

I got my mapchicks maps a week ago and have been studying them. I highly suggest them for first timers.

The sargassum situation from puerto Morelos south is really bad. You couldn't pay me to go back to akumal. The guided outfits have turned that into a shite show. Playa del carmens beaches have looked horrible recently. Check the web cams of there, akumal and Tulum. We've been going down there for years and years and I love playa del carmen, puerto aventuras and tulum, but the horrible sargassum has pushed us to check out isla mujeres. From what I am reading here I won't be disappointed. Their beaches look mostly free of the seaweed.
