Just booked my Alaskan cruise
Posted by jkylejohnson on 2/10/19 at 6:14 pm00
Going through Holland America Lines (EuroDam). Cruising Puget Sound and Stephens Passage. Stops are Glacier Bay, Sitka, Ketchikan, and Victoria (BC).
Has anyone done this cruise before or familiar with a few of these places ? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Interesting itenerary. No Juneau? Stephens passage is the route ships take to get here.
Sitka kicks arse. Few ships go there, do its never crowded.
Glacier Bay is amazing, Lots of tidewater glaciers and marine wildlife

No Juneau.. I was able to find it on a flash sale for 800 per thru expedia and rolled the dice. I read on previous threads that glacier bay was great just was unsure about the rest. You live in Alaska eh Roger?

I live in Juneau, about 50 miles from Glacier Bay.
Sitka is one of the more underrated towns in the country, you'll love it. Sitka Sound is incredible.

I have taken HAL to Alaska twice and have sailed the Mediterranean on the Eurodam. You will enjoy it. I have been to all four of the stops. My favorite is Victoria. We spent several nights there one time before embarking at Vancouver. Victoria is a beautiful city. It is fun just to walk the streets. The center of town is the Empress Hotel. Be sure to go there. If the weather is nice, go to Buchart Gardens.......The scenery is gorgeous at Glacier Bay.......Sitka is a quaint and historic town........We didn't do much in Ketchikan other than just stroll around town. There is a house of ill repute on the boardwalk that sells tickets to get in, but before you spend good money to go in there, please be advised that it is now a museum and not a functioning whorehouse.

Is the sale still on?

Thanks for the feedback so far. I'm really excited.
Not sure if sale is still on. I think it said through 28th . Google Alaskan cruises expedia and see what you can find. I just did a basic inside room.

I have done two Alaskan cruises. Your room is your choice. I had balconies for both because the scenery is just breath-taking and we spent a lot of time just drinking on our balcony taking in the views. However, you can do that up on deck also. Some people prefer to be doing all the activities and moving around the ship all day so paying for a balcony isn't worth it for them.
One thing about Ketchikan, beware of where you dock. The first cruise we went on we docked where there was absolutely nothing going on. We were truly shocked that there was absolutely nothing to see or do in this town and didn't understand why any cruise ship would go there. If you get off the ship and see nothing, you are docked in that area. Just go through the tunnel and you will be in the city center and understand why it is a port.

Thanks. Yeah I didn't plan on spending much time in the room. Not enough to shell out another 600-800 bucks. Would rather save that for excursions. I've been hearing Ketchikan is pretty lame. Where is the best whale watching? Also, what is there to do in Victoria?

Whale watching in Sitka, if you're not going to Juneau.
Whales can be seen right in Sitka Sound
There's a dormant volcano in Sitka as well. A bear sanctuary, raptor center, good fishing and great kayaking.
You could also ditch all of that and climb Harbor Mountain or Mt Verstovia
Sitka Sound

I wouldn't call Ketchikan lame, it just isn't quite as exciting as the other stops. Just look at the excursions and see if there is anything you want to do there.
We did whale watching out of Juneau but they should offer it at almost every stop. You can also do plenty of whale watching from the ship but going on an excursion is the best. I am fascinated by whales so it is a must-do for me.
Victoria was a place we just walked around. It was a gorgeous clear day when we went and Victoria is probably one of the prettiest and cleanest cities I have ever visited. I would love to go back some day. There is a decent walk from where you dock to the city but take the walk, and on the way back go through the neighborhoods and feel like a local.

I was mistaken Roger. Juneau is one of the stops.

Definitely do whale watching in Juneau.
If you're into hiking, there are some cool trails right downtown
