I've been flying a lot lately and realize I'm about halfway through. Have plenty of miles to get a free trip or two and also usually shop fares between the few airlines.

Do you ever actually get a free first class for being a peasant silver?

I used to but over the last year or so it has gotten a lot crappier.

I find that the "silver" level in any travel program is just another way of saying "suck"....

You get to sit in the delta club at braves games. Free food and booze all night. Don’t get the nachos they suck

You may get an upgrade on a non-elite heavy route at a strange time.

Like AVP-ATL on a Sunday morning in the fall.

I didn’t know that, good to know! I’ve been silver for a few years and have yet to get any real perk.

Yes and have a perfect example from today (I'm a DL silver). Had been flying standby all weekend, but saw the weather was crappy in buffalo and nyc so decided at 2am yesterday to book a one-way confirmed seat on Delta from JFK to Buffalo for this morning. At 1030am yesterday got the confirmation that I was upgraded to 1st, checked the flight status this morning and the plane was completely full due to the weather/ reroutes. I would not have made the standby flights, would not have been upgraded, and would likely still be in NYC had I not booked on DL. You can also use the sky priority line at airports and check a bag for free

Follow TPG. The Points Guy has placed a valuation on each Delta medallion.

You will get to board in group 37D... it’s right between guys that dated the pilots wife before they got together, and ones that dated her after. There’s a fairly good chance of getting your carry on in the overhead compartment still.

I'm silver and my dog survives every flight.

I did a few times which was always from Birmingham to Atlanta LOL. I did get lucky and got a free bump from MSP to Spokane Washington once.

was disappointed when I had to use some of my miles for an emergency flight for a family health emergency, and they took silver away for using them.

was nice to always board in the SKY group and not in the normal zone 2's i always got - but it was a nice perk i got for nothing more than flying for work.

I fluctuate between silver and gold status. Silver is fairly worthless other than priority boarding and a very occasional upgrade. It used to be better.

Nope. I’m platinum and the gf is diamond. Even diamond is not that great anymore. Delta sucks. I’d probably switch to Southwest if I lost my status.

Honestly not much. You may get an upgrade here or there. At silver you don’t get sky priority yet. If you expense stuff or pay off your credit card monthly you may want to look into the delta Amex. Going from silver to gold actually has more tangible perks.

The smart move is to pick an airline and try to fly them as much as possible.

Why do you say diamond sucks? I love my diamond status. Upgrades 80% of the time, priority line when shite hits the fan, ability to redeposit award tickets, and 4 global upgrades a year.

Yeah agreed, there's a huge jump from silver to gold. I'm usually gold or platinum year to year. There's a decent jump at each, honestly. Gold you'll get the priority and much more upgrades, platinum you get the free gift and upgrades are rampant, and diamond you get 2 gifts with the 4 global upgrades, which is huge.
