How often do.you offer travel advice to friends and family? Ever had someone mad?
My friends and family tend to ask me about places and what I like since they know I like to travel. I try to help out but I refuse to offer recommendations after a buddy hates everything I recommended and criticized it. Now I tell them what I liked and leave it at that.

How is that different than a recommendation?

The phrasing of it

There is a difference between, "I recommend" vs "well I liked, so and so but you may not"

Do you not know your friends and family well enough to generally know what they would and wouldn't like?

Either way, weird melt

Wait, that's a melt to you? Odd reaction to a thread to say the least.

I get asked for reccs pretty often. I give them my opinions, which are just that. I’ve also referred numerous people to this board for info.

Yea, sometimes I get asked a lot of recs. Sometimes I loved a place so much that I recommend it to people and they don't have the same experience I kinda feel bummed for them.

Yeah, I’m pretty religious about always weasel-wording when I’m talking to someone irl about travel experiences too. “We liked the Devil’s Causeway but to some folks it’s a pile of rocks at the beach” kind of thing.

I don’t tell anyone irl about hotels ever.

I point them to the Internet.

I'll give suggestions/opinions, but usually they're on universally praised things so it's not like I'm out on an island.

When the hotel I like is #1 or #2 in a city for Tripadvisor, if you don't like it, well, your problem.

I get both positive and negative feedback. I enjoy the positive because it means they had a great time. I don't give a shite about their negative feedback because not everyone is going to enjoy everything I enjoy. Regardless, those same people continue to ask.

I once made recommendations on some places in Thailand. Ends up none of those things exist (4 years had passed) and I sent friends to dead ends and shady people who occupied the spaces. Now I tell people to double check online

Friends yes, family no.

The losers in my family don’t like to travel.

Most of my advice to friends was because they were going to the Middle East / Colombia and they were freaked out by the security situation or local customs / norms etc. Also wanted recommendations for neighborhoods, districts, clubs, restaurants etc that were “pro-American” lmao

No one has ever been mad, I’ve been and they haven’t, people just say they read something contradictory blah blah blah
