We are flying into Barcelona on December 27 and plan on ending the trip in Paris.
We plan on taking a train to Avignon for NYE and renting a car to explore the south french providence before training to Lyon than Paris. What are some must see towns to see near Avignon.
Also, How is driving in France?

I'm doing this exact trip except in reverse next summer so I'm quite interested, aa well.
The sticky only has one short summary of Paris and an overview of Normandy. Nothing apparent on Avignon, Lyon, or anything in the surrounding area. This is my largest unknown when roughing out the itinerary.

Avignon and Orange are great towns with loads of historical sites to see.
Do you like wine? Especially red wine? If so, Chateauneuf-du-Pape is worth a day.

In that area, I've been to Aix-en-Provence, Cassis, Nice and a small town in the mountains. I drove in that area picking up the car in Aix and it wasn't much of a problem other than trying to find the car rental return at the airport in Nice. GPS routed me to the wrong terminal. Even though driving wasn't bad, I prefer the train. I wasn't impressed with Nice. Since you are going during the winter, you won't be going to the beach area. The calanques at Cassis are nice, but again that's out during the winter.

did the same kind of thing for our HM a few yrs ago. Train from Barcelona to Avignon, then car from Avingnon to Nice, stopping in Lyon and Aix on the way. Driving was fine, make sure you get a GPS that is set to englinsh. The french highways and interstates are well marked and easy to understand. We rented a Ford C-Max, it was stick shift and I almost burnt up the clutch as I hadnt drove stick since my high school truck. Got to Nice at 5pm rush hour and sat in traffic then had to drop off car at train station--that was fun. There's plenty of stuff to see in those cities for about 1-2 days, then move on tot he next. Used Rick Steeves guidebooks--highly recommend. We loved Nice, was there in October. any other specific questions, let me know.
