Ho Chi Minh?
Question for the board... trying to finalize my trip in 2 weeks and I have to go from HK to SG. All of the directs are ridiculous, so looking for a stop off in between.

Looking at Ho Chi Minh as a possibility.

1) worth a day layover?
2) easy to communicate in English?
3) hotels and decent sites near the airport?

It’s Saigon. Say it with me. Saigon.
It’s a great city, communication is relatively easy and yes it’s worth exploring. There are hotels everywhere.

re: Ho Chi Minh?
I’ve read to stay in District 1 and then everything worth seeing on a one day trip is within walking distance?

Looks to be about 20 min from the airport and they use Grab there, so should be a pretty easy in and out

Yep. Like most of SE Asia just walking down random streets with no plans or destination is cool. Just explore and see what you find.

re: Ho Chi Minh?
I have a 8hr layover there in a few weeks.
It looks like there is bus 109 that goes to the city center for $1, so we are going to take that and kind of follow the path that the hop on hop off bus takes, but just by walking on our own.

Ben Thanh market, the river front, pedestrian walking street, note dame cathedral, post office, war remnants museum and then lunch at Royal Saigon restaurant or just street food. Looks pretty easy. Visa is $25 and you can get it online in advance (watch for the many scam websites though). It took 2 days for mine to be approved.

worked there for a month last year .... awesome city.
District 1 is easy -- tons of restaurants, rooftops, bars etc. Walking distance to the museums, markets etc.

the Japanese section is cool especially if you like Ramen and really hot ladies offering massage services. And geisha bars are fun there as well.

you will be able to communicate with most people in the hospitality industry.

And it looks like Grab is the way to go for transportation?

And thoughts on Vietnam Airlines? Looks like them and VietJet are the two predominant carriers into Ho Chi Minh from HKG

Grab is definitely the way to move around. It worked flawlessly and no scammy cab drivers. The two times we took a cab in Saigon they tried to scam us. Every other time was Grab and it was great.

Vietnam Airlines was fine for us. Flew them a half dozen times without complaint. Nothing fancy, but nothing terrible.

Everything I’ve read is Grab from the airport to District 1 and its about $5 USD. Then you can walk anywhere from there. Definitely lots of warnings about the cab drivers and scamming people.

My experience is about two years old, but be aware that you can't sign up on Grab unless you're on a Vietnamese server/cell network.
