What are you looking to do? Lay out on a quiet beach, hike, do a lot of touristy stuff?

I believe for the first trip that you should go to Oahu , more sights and things to do.

And if you do Oahu....Pearl Harbor is a must.
Get there early to Pearl Harbor so you can get tickets for the USS Arizona memorial(you take a small ferry/boat over to the memorial). When I went we got there later and tickets were sold out. I could see the memorial from the main area...but wasn't the same.
There are also other ships you can tour. You can easily spend an entire day there if you wanted.

Mid 50’s ? I’d go to Kauai . It’s extremely relaxed and so beautiful. Stay at the Grand Hyatt for the pools/ food/ luxury. Or if you prefer go to the North Shore and stay at the St Regis. Either way rent a car and see the sites.
Google Hanalei , Waimea Canyon, Na Pali Coast power rafting, The tunnels etc .
If not Kauai Is choose Maui.

If you go to Oahu check out the north shore.

Lived there, so I would recommend
1) Oahu - it will have all the places you and your friends will recognize
2) Maui - more authentic Hawaiian, but still touristy enough
3) Kauai - even more authentic, less touristy
4) Big Island - if a volcano is active

Oahu / Honolulu kind of reminds me of a tropical Detroit - dirty, trashy, brown, ghetto, etc. outside of about a block in from the wakiki beach. But is probably worth a visit for a couple days especially to see Pearl Harbor and if you like the more party atmosphere. The Ahlani Disney resort on the other end is pretty nice.
Maui is beautiful and does have a lot of things to see and do (road to Hanna with waterfalls and several different kinds of beaches, zip lines, snorkel, great beaches, etc.).
On my last trip I flew direct from Chicago to Honolulu, stayed in a hotel for 3 nights then jumped to Maui for a week in a condo at Kanapali (sometimes it is nice just to make your own meal rather than eating out all the time). Was a nice mixture of experiencing different aspects of the islands.

Stayed on Maui early December. Perfect mix of sites and lazy beach days. Rented a Jeep and booked condo through VRBO in Kihei - great spot but a bit of a drive from some of the sites.
Did Road to Hana (pools at Ohe’o were off limits for swimming), Haleakala sunrise (cold as a mfer), snorkeling at Molokini crater, Old Lahaina Luau, walked Paia and Front St.
Favorite eats: Mama’s Fishhouse (best sashimi of my life), Humuhumunukunukuapua'a at Grand Wailea (really nice at sunset), Monkeypod, South Maui Fish Co. (the poke bowl, holy shite).

You can't go wrong on any of the islands.
The scenery in Kuaui is second to none.
I know a lot that have stayed on Kona.
We stayed on Maui and spent a day on Oahu.
Maui was a very relaxing vacation.
Oahu, a little more hustle and bustle, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, North Shore, Waikiki, etc.
