Got back Saturday from first trip to Isla Mujeres

The trip was for our honeymoon and we stayed at an all inclusive (Palace) because it was free to us, but next time we will definitely be going the airbnb route. We ate breakfast most mornings at the resort and each had a few drinks there but we essentially only used the resort for sleeping.
We rented a golf cart for our entire stay and in my opinion, it is an absolute must. Cruising the island on the golf cart was super enjoyable. I'd read that it's not a great idea to booze on the carts but we did pretty much the entire time with no issue. We weren't hammered drunk, obviously. We enjoyed hanging around the north end of the island for a couple meals and late night drinks, band watching etc, but we really enjoyed the golf cart commute from the south end of the island to the north a couple times a day and will again stay on the south side of the island when we go back.
The locals were all super friendly, the food was incredible and cheap(as was the booze). Really cannot think of a single negative of the trip other than the occasional arse-raping from mosquitoes after the sun went down. One thing I find fascinating about the place is there is very little police presence, yet people are friendly and things go on peacefully and mostly orderly.
I talked to a couple residents there who were from the U.S. and vacationed there and either never left, or just gave up on the rat race and sold their shite and moved to the island. The allure is real. You could live like a king on the island with 30K/year.
I'd read a ton of reviews of the island before we decided on it as our destination and had pretty high hopes because so many people seem to love it. It actually surpassed my expectations. I roll my eyes most times when people say a location has a "vibe" but this place really does. Truly an awesome little island that we cannot wait to get back to.
9.5/10 will go again

Went in April and I agree it was an absolute awesome trip. Met a couple that moved there from Houston and were living the life.

Just had dinner at Dopis on the little strip. This place is about as relaxed as I could ever get. Weather has been fantastic too. The locals do drive a little pushy though

I’ll be going July 7-13 for a week and am looking forward to it.

Would this be a good solo- travel destination?
The board is always very high on this place, and I'm deciding if it is a place for me in the future

I guess that sort of depends on what you like to do for travel/vacation. I could absolutely have a great time there by myself.

Yeah it would!! I'd definitely do it solo. Especially if you want to try diving or take an excursion like a trip to Isla Contoy. If you do check out tony garcia on Facebook. He does small group tours and ppl like him a lot. Wind was a little too bad when we were there and he didn't do any groups that week. Next time.

I'll be solo when I go in July and will let you know how it was. I'm sure I will have a great vacation.

What is the best area of the island to stay? Is there a location where the food and bars are located?
Posted on 6/28/18 at 11:33 am to wickowick
There are bars and restaurants all over but the largest concentration by far is at Playa Norte. Most stay up by Playa Norte. Ixchel is very popular but I prefer a quieter location on the beach without a bazillion chairs and people so I stay at Hotel Secreto and walk around the point to Playa Norte when I want to hang out there. It’s about a 2 minute walk.

I was going to ask, how much would you all recommend that I take to spend on food and drink for the week? I believe I read in the sticky that most places only take cash. Is it better to get Pesos before I go or maybe get them at the Ferry Terminal in Cancun? Thanks in advance!

You don't need pesos before you go. The rate at the ferry terminal wasn't too bad. I believe it was like 18.2 and I got 19 at another little place which were both very close to the actual rate at that time. The airports were the absolute worst rates. Avoid. There was a tiny little place across from ferry north a couple blocks with a green awning I went to several times to exchange. That was best I found.
I'd say you can have all the food and drink you want with 100 US converted to pesos per day if you are a guy. I don't eat much and had on average 4-5 drinks per day and spent WAY less. A lot of the places near the ferry charge crazy prices for drinks, but everywhere else is cheap as could be. Try North Garden, roosters, mangos for breakfast, mangos again for lunch, Olivia, limon (reservations for nice courtyard tables for both of these). Lola Valentina, chilitos by Ruben, and rubens for dinner. I wanted to try boxkay for tacos, but they were out of town. I used Facebook and maps to locate all of these places and the directions were perfect. I could go on. I researched the shite out of my trip and feel like I hit all the good ones. Of course drive around to soggy peso, the joint etc for drinks on cart. Just don't get stupid wasted and drive. A cart is a near must. They can run about 60 per day. We rented from coco carts and didn't get a dud. If ppl are passing you bring it back and exchange.

Thank you so much for all the information. I was thinking around 100-150 pesos a day for food and drinks. I'll also wait to exchange once I get to Isla!
Posted on 6/28/18 at 3:03 pm to Bryno1960
100-150 pesos is $5-$8. Even on Isla you’ll need more than that. My wife and I budget $100 a day cash for eating and drinking and we have money left over. That’s around 1900 pesos a day currently. You’ll need have to three quarters of that if you’re solo.
Posted on 6/28/18 at 7:11 pm to VABuckeye
I'm wondering if he meant 100 US per day, which is what I told him. I was thinking it was a typo.
Posted on 6/28/18 at 7:31 pm to SuwMwf
I meant to say I was budgeting 1K USD for the week which, according to you and VA Buckeye should be more than enough.
Posted on 6/28/18 at 8:54 pm to Bryno1960
Yep. You’ll be good. Enjoy Isla!
