The wife and I are going spend a few nights up there for a little get away. Should we expect really cold weather and possibly snow at that time of year? Also should I rent an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicle to get around the mountains or is that not necessary?

I’ll be flying into Denver and renting a vehicle regardless so that’s why I’m asking about a rental.

I can't be alot of help since only have been during the summer...but I follow some Estes news and they definitely start getting some snow around that time. I don't think anything super heavy but it's a real possibility.

Yeah from what I gather it’s really hit or miss. It will be damn near November when we go so I will definitely prepare for cold weather. I’m just more curious about getting around in a vehicle.

I always rent a 4 door wrangler at the Denver airport
you never know when you’ll want to take a little detour and even if you don’t it’s fun to drive

I was surprised at how expensive a rental car was at the Denver Airport. The airport itself is in the middle of nowhere

What did you rent and how much compared to other airports?

I have mentioned this before, but if you're not in a huge rush, an Uber or shuttle into town to a non AP rental car place will save you quite a bit typically if you're going to have the car more than a day or two. I usually only bother with this when I'm solo, but worth checking the price differential at least...

Just reread OP... Probably wouldn't bother if only a couple of days...

But yeah. Better than decent chance you'll have some snow. Like another poster above all of my time there was in warmer months but had friends who worked there through the winter. Mid/End of October pretty consistently had at least some snowfall. I'd plan on getting something with traction if for nothing else, peace of mind.

Trail Ridge Rd closes in late Oct, so you'll be limited on how deep across the NP you'll be able to go if they have already closed it when you are there.

We went 1st week of October this past year and weather was great. Started snowing day before we left and snowed almost every day for next few weeks. Closed Trail Ridge early. This past year wasn’t a normal for snow. Have been before for Thanksgiving and had to drive higher in park to see any snow at all. Like mentioned earlier, that time of year is hit or miss, but being on east side of range the snow they do get that early usually isn’t terrible

I’m just now starting to look at rates. Economy car seems to be averaging about $30 a day. I’m thinking I might need a truck with 4 wheel drive and that will be a good bit more I’m sure.

The pictures of the place we are staying have Elk walking up to the cabin. This will be first time visiting Estes Park and we can’t wait.

I am going to Estes > WP end of June. My rental for an Avis Ford Explorer was about 500 after taxes for 8 days.
