Hey guys,
I'm taking my wife to Croatia for her 30th. We selected Croatia because I had already been to the UK and France, and we wanted a relaxing trip. We booked very inexpensive flights into and out of Venice giving us ten days in Europe after subtracting international flights. After picking up the rental car we are driving a few hours to triste to stay and get over our jetlag before driving the rest of the way to Dubrovnik. We plan to spend three days there before meandering to istria. The plan is to spend three days in istria and two in Venice before heading out.

This leaves me with 1-2 days to make it to istria. We are doing a wine stop in ston, doing krka, and stopping in sibenik to hit a Michelin star restaurant. With this remaining travel day should we hit pag and opatija or rijeka? Any overall thoughts on the itinerary? Thanks.

You need to be taking pics of your wife and plastering this thread with them.

Trieste to Dubrovnik is a LONG drive. I just drove from Makarska to Venice. Never again. Croatia border crossings have been chaotic with extremely long delays. Three weeks ago I drove from Croatia into Slovenia, and the line of cars waiting to cross into Croatia was easily a mile long.

Spent a day in Opatija and thought it was awesome. Had an “Italy in Croatia” feel to it. Although you’re going to Krka, the Plitvice park is remarkable and with far more waterfalls than Krka. Easy to reach Slovenia (Bled and surrounding national parks) which is unbelievably beautiful.

Three days in Dubrovnik is a lot. Plan to do activities outside of the town or a lot of beach time.

On your route it’s easy to divert off the A1 to reach Split and/or Trogir. Both are on your way to Sibenik.

My family is Croatian and I go every year. Sretan put.

Driving to Dubrovnik from Venice sounds terrible, and Dubrovnik is overrated anyway.

I wanted to push a little further than trieste on the first day to shorten the Dubrovnik drive on the second day, but my wife really wanted to see trieste and there wasn't a more natural place to fit it in. I guess we are just going to get up really early that day to make up for the border crossings.

Will definitely stop in opatija or rijeka on the way to rovinj on the way back West. Any recommendations on what to see in those towns?

We chose krka because we heard it offered a similar aesthetic to plitvice but it's on the way from Dubrovnik to sibenik. Plitvice would have added another 3 hours to the drive to or from istria and Dubrovnik. still worth checking out?

Planning on doing old town plus walls for a day, hitting cavtat or some of the other outlying areas on the other days. Is mljet or korcula worth ferrying over to for a day?

We thought about making split our Midway stop on the way back to istria, but I understood it was pretty metropolitan and I was looking for relaxing times. Plus sibenik was very close to krka and had a Michelin star restaurant we wanted to check out. What's the story with trogir?

Thanks for the input

Wow. Glad I opened this thread. Will have an extra day in Piran, Slovenia and was thinking about driving over to Croatia just to do it. I see that sounds like a bad idea. Not to derail the thread, but how about going into Italy from Slovenia?

I have questions about going in the opposite direction. I would love to do some of the former Yugoslav national parks, but I'm not sure how they would be in November when I'll be there.

If you are going all the way to Croatia I feel like you have to go to Hvar.

I know. I considered that as well but hvar is a significant detour that requires ferry travel. My wife and I are not huge party goers which is the main draw of Hvar from what I've read. My goal was relaxing vacation with beaches. My wife's goal was sightseeing and wine tasting. Does Hvar line up with those goals and justify an extra 3-4 hours of driving? It was the same with plitvice. 3-4 hours out of the way to see something similar to what we can see in krka.

My family is from Hvar, so my opinion is obviously biased, but to drive that far and not experience Hvar would be regrettable. From Dubrovnik, you would drive to Drvenik on the mainland (2 hours) and catch the 25 minute car ferry to the town of Sucuraj on Hvar. From Sucuraj it's about an hour's drive to Hvar town on the opposite side of the island. The drive along the spine of the island is really awesome, and Hvar town is really a place to check out. Yes, there's the party scene, but there's obviously a lot more to experience. From there you catch the car ferry from Stari Grad (20 minutes from Hvar) to Split, and you're back on your way north to Sibenik. It's really easy if you plan correctly.

Plitvice is definitely out of the way and about an hour or so from the A1 (and back). IMO Krka alone is good enough with your itinerary. Didn't have a lot of time Opatija, so I really don't have any suggestions. Again, if you have the time, you will not regret the drive into the Slovenian mountains (about 1.5 hours or so from Opatija mostly on major highways). Lake Bled and Vogel in Slovenia were pretty amazing.

You can catch a high speed ferry from Dubrovnik to Korcula or Mljet. If you want a quiet day with nature in an unspoiled park, go to Mljet. If you want a day exploring an old town with beaches and wine, go to Korcula. Literally nothing else on Mljet other than the park.

Enjoy. Wish I was going back

Whut? No Plitvice National Park? It's one of the great wonders of the world. I'd personally can all this talk and make sure you at least go there if you can. You're likely never to go back and you'd regret not going in my book. I went out of my way from Venice on our way to Slovenia to see it. OMG.

Prior Trip Report

BTW..We LOVED Opatija. That was a our stop over after the long flight to Venice. Couple of hour drive over was pretty easy. Spent a couple of days there.

Now, if you want to top all of his, go straight to Slovenia!

PS: Nice article on Croatia...

Hvar town is party central, but the rest of the island is nothing but relaxation, awesome landscapes and good wine. I went back in June (and still owe the Travel Board a review, sorry, it’s coming soon) and loved the place. Before Hvar Island, I got to spend time in Milna on Brac. That island was even more laid back and you get to witness what living on island time really is. I ended the trip with 2 1/2 days in Dubrovnik, should’ve only spent 1 full day and headed to Cavtat. That place is chill as all get out. Hope y’all have a great time!
