Looking to do something different and make some day trips with my family. Wife (no pics), 11 year old and 7 year old boys.
We live in the Ponchatouls area and are trying to stay away from typical visits, NOLA, BR, MS Gulf Coast and discover any hidden gems that y'all may have stumbled across. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Avery Island/Jungle Gardens, see the giant Buddha and tour Tabasco
St Fracisville, tour a historic home or two, poke around in the graveyard, go on a hike to,the national champion bald cypress tree at Cat Island (when the rivers not flooded)
Go to the Bonnet Carre spillway while it’s open and see all that water rushing thru

LSU Rural Life Museum in Baton Rouge. It's very interesting. There is a big indoor building with all kinds of historical displays and items and many outdoor buildings from rural areas of Louisiana on the grounds. Its very kid friendly. Highly recommend this place.

Thanks, will look more into Avery Island and the Rural Life Museum.
We lived in St. Francisville for 7 years so we have been to the Grand Champion Bald Cypress but oddly enough have never hiked to the Waterfalls.
Thanks for all suggestions thus far.

Are any of you into birdwatching?
Lake Martin is interesting, and a good site to see roseate spoonbills.
Grand Isle might be too far for a daytrip unless you start out really early....but a worthwhile trip if you enjoy fishing, crabbing, low key hanging out at the beach.

I would say Avery Island but it gets so hot during summer months, plus mosquitos, it's a lot better during spring or fall.
Same with Rural Life Museum but they do have some indoor stuff you can see.
Some of the state parks are really nice this time of year as well, like Chicot State Park or Lake Fausse Pointe or Fontainbleau State Park are all neat to see and they have some water activities as well.

The 7 year old wants to go fishing. We don’t have a boat, only a couple of kayaks.
Have never been to Grand Isle, so we do need to go there to try it out.
What are the best state parks for bank fishing? For salt/brackish, we have fished the pier at Fontainebleau and walked along lake front there, but water was extremely shallow and wind was crazy when we went.

Grand Isle state park has an elevated fishing pier, so that's a good choice. NOLA.com had a list of top 12 bank-fishing spots: LINK
The Jean Lafitte national park branch in Lafitte has some elevated boardwalks into the cypress swamp. Prettiest in the spring when the irises are blooming, but interesting enough year-round (w/bug spray).

Agree with Lafitte. Bayou Coquille trail in summer has lots to see.
