Family Vacation to Costa Rica
Posted by Jerrysworld on 11/5/19 at 9:22 am01
Planning for June 2020 17 yr old, 12 yr old, 9 yr old, wife and me. Flying Southwest and they only fly into San Jose. We are definitely more beach type than mountains, forest, etc. but would like to be able to do both
What area should we focus on? Definitely renting a car and will be doing VRBO.

If you are flying into San Jose you want to head west towards Jaco.
I would NOT stay in Jaco. It is very much a spring break tourist town is kind of seedy, IMO.
I would head south from Jaco and stay near Manuel Antonio.
Beautiful National Park with great beaches nearby, rain forests, and some nice BnBs, resorts, etc
You're too far to do the resort areas near Liberia imo.

Manuel Antonio for at least part of it. There's some nice AirBnBs and restaurants in town and the park has some great hiking and an amazing beach. Lots of wildlife around too. Plenty fishing out of nearby Quepos as well, if you wanted to go that route.

Montezuma, exploring the waterfalls out of town, Cabo Blanco park, and the Mal Pais area.

Southwest flies into Liberia too. Guanacaste is a great area to visit.

I stayed in Quepos by Manuel Antonio for a week.
Was an amazing time and saw tons of American families there.

Also a fan of Montezuma. Rent a 4WD vehicle and take the ferry over, if you're flying into San Jose. I don't really suggest driving the peninsula overland from Liberia... we did it during the rainy season and it was... interesting... to say the least.
Just be aware that ATMS in Montezuma sometimes run out of money, so you have a nice 25 minute drive to the nearest one. That's a lot of fun when you get to a restaurant, also remote, that only takes cash and you realize you're short on cash, then you drive back into town to find that the ATMs are out of money... all while your family is waiting for you to return to the restaurant so you can pay out.

That, and don’t get stuck in Puntarenas by missing the last ferry of the day.
We took our 4by and tried to drive to Tamarindo up the coast from Manzanillo. They use the representation of a roads on maps very creatively in Costa Rica. Good times.

Really like the Peninsula, great beaches on the pacific side, I really like Santa Teresa. And Montezuma has some great waterfalls, definitely consider a day there.
However, as others have noted, some roads are good, some are not good, and some are not actually roads, and many are up and down and curvy. So try to plan driving/travel during the daylight hours as much as possible, especially during the rainy season.
And yes, the Puntarenas ferry is fun and definitely the best way to cross the gulf.

I been to some of these places. Most recommendations are good. Just wanted to point out you'll be there during rainy season so expect a shower around lunch everyday. Rent an SUV and not a car. Thank me later, go fishing in the ocean if you don't get seasick.
