Europe Trip Amsterdam-> London > Paris -> HOME
Posted by tiger114 on 12/30/19 at 10:56 pm00
I am taking the wife and 3 kids (ages 13, 12, & 12) to Europe this summer. I would love recommendations on where to stay and things to do and places to eat.
My time is pretty flexible, but was thinking of breaking it down Day 1-3 in Amsterdam, Days 3-7 in London, Days 7-11 in Paris, and Days 11-14 in Rome.
We’re going to be in London during Wimbledon and in Paris during July 4th in case there is anything that anyone recommends with those events.
I have a lot of Hilton and Marriott points, but probably only enough for 1 city each. The rest will be Airbnb’s.
Any help or suggestions are most appreciated.

Not happening. I get a 1-month sabbatical through work. I don’t know when I’ll have the next opportunity to get over there.
But, that’s why we want to spend so much time (~4 days) in each place. We can make it more or less depending on what we want to do.

Unless you own a teleporter you are not accounting for something here.

Train from Amsterdam to London and London to Paris. Flying from Paris to Rome.

If y’all think dragging three kids across four countries in that amount of time sounds fun, have at it. I’d stay home and go to Grand Isle before a forced march of that duration/range. But chacun a sont gout.
My first trip to Europe I was 19 with my parents and had sisters 16 and 14. We flew into Paris, drove to munich, drove back to Paris, drove to belgium, ferried to London, then drove from London to Paris. I scratch my head wondering what the hell my dad was thinking but he got cheap flights on a new introductory route. The trip was a blast and we had a great time.

To echo another poster, re think your path. Amsterdam to London and back to the continent is a bit of back tracking. Try and go Amsterdam to Paris and then to London. Or London to Paris to Amsterdam.
July 4th in Paris or anywhere in Europe will pass with little fanfare but if you were in France for Bastille Day could be something special.
I do think saving Rome for another trip would really be a good idea. 3 cities over 14 days is gonna provide a lot more relaxation than a fairly long travel time across the continent basically. But you know your family better than strangers on the internet.
My best advice for you to on lodging would be to find AirBnBs in all the cities. Save your hotel points and stay in a really nice hotel the last night. I’ve found a last night of room service, a good hotel bar, a swimming pool for the kids, can make the slog back home a bit more bearable.

Agreed. And I'm usually the opposition to hungryone saying you need 17 days to even scratch the surface in _________.
London/Amsterdam/Paris gives you three very distinctive cities and cultures with a reasonable amount of time in each. If you wanted to add Brussels or something I wouldn't object but Rome is just one stop too far for me.
Does sound like a good trip.

I really appreciate all of the feedback and I will rethink the Rome leg. I just hate to not see Rome and I would love for my kids to come home having seen the Sistine Chapel, Coliseum, etc. in person.
I would love some recommendations on which areas to stay in in Paris, London, and (just in case) Rome?
For London, I am thinking around Westminster
For Paris, I was told that 7th Arrondissement was the best area for first-timers with kids
For Rome, I was told to stay in the west part of the central city
For Amsterdam, I read to stay in Old Cetrum, but away from Red Light District
London: Southwark/London Bridge/Borough Market area is affordable, close to major transport links, and full of Air BnBs.
Paris: 7th, or the border between the 7th and the 5th around Odeon/Jardin de Luxembourg puts you close to major sites and in areas full of cafes, restaurants, etc.

Are you dying?
Just go again and make it an Italy trip.
(I know you said the Sabbatical but I assume you can go on vacation. You only need about 3ish days for Rome, and you can also do Florence and maybe Venice at 3ish a piece).

My recommendations for which areas to stay. Not my usual recommendations, but the ones best for your situation.
London: But with your situation, Westminster is fine I guess for a first time with kids, that way you don't have to tube everywhere. But Covent Garden is better and right nearby, and actually closer to more sites...in a way
Paris: 7eme is a great choice, or choose the 3eme (Marais)
Rome: Trastevere
Amsterdam: Yes, for your situation Centrum is best
If you are going to eliminate one city, do either Rome or Amsterdam. I would lean on Amsterdam (I would also recommend eliminating one city regardless)

Amsterdam is definitely the most "cuttable" city, but it makes more sense logistically.
Amsterdam -> Paris -> London is very easy train rides. Rome would add more substantial travel time (you'd have to add a flight in there instead of just taking easy trains).

And just to be clear, do the trip that you want to do.
This board, including myself, leans heavily towards the following:
1) Give yourself sometime to enjoy each place and you will like that city better, and
2) You WILL be back if you chose to, so don't treat it like this will be the only time you will ever go.
However if you truly feel like you will never go back, do what you want to do.
(Personally...I do not like Rome at all and like other parts of Italy much better. I feel like Italy is much better done by itself, Florence and some other places are extremely enjoyable)

There’s some pretty terrible advice on this board. Some of it sounds like they have never left the country and are relaying info from trip advisor.

Its solid advice. The OP's itinerary is not geographically logical,is too short a time in each city and is too many travel days IMO. Like others have said, cut out Rome and add days to London and Paris. As for Amsterdam, its my favorite city in Europe but there aren't a lot of iconic sites to see like in London or Paris so cut Amsterdam or reduce the days there. 2 days is plenty to see the "touristy stuff".

Oh, please. This board runs the gamut from Disneyphiles who go 3x a year to people who have walked the Camino Santiago, hikers, and wine tourists. Diversity of perspective and interests are represented. Most ppl have a clear POV and you can take their advice accordingly. Clearly, I’m the slow, anthropological food traveler who doesn’t like to hurry....guilty as charged, with no FOMO.
And why cap on TripAdvisor? While it’s not the end all, be all, it is a very useful resource, especially in the lodgings listings where you can see unvarnished travelers photos. I’d rather look at unstaged tourist pics to determine if a place is suitable over the wide angle, styled marketing pics.
