Estimates of when US driving vacations would be back to normal?
Was looking at a West Coast trip.

If went now, likely have many states with closed restaurants and maybe even parks.

Think we are through this by May?

I think that may be wishful thinking.

We have a trip planned for May 8-16, fly into Vegas, stay there a couple of days, then drive to Zion->Bryce->Grand Canyon and then fly back out of Vegas.

Right now we are thinking we will cancel, but will probably wait until after Easter to pull the plug.

Vegas is pretty well shut down, all of the MGM properties are closed and not sure about the others. The parks are open, but most facilities are closed. Not sure if they will stay open - Great Smoky Mountain and Petrified Forest are now closed and other NPS sites may follow.

I am thinking even if there is an ok to "re-open" from the national level, I think some of the western governors will keep things closed, especially Cali and Nevada.

completely done? no

some places might have no restrictions by May, but there will still be pockets/hot spots

I wouldn't plan anything for May, I'd say July at the earliest

we have a trip planned for mid June, but its just a cabin in the mountains, so not really worried about it being affected

Yeah, you may be able to eat in restaurants and go to stores and some sites by May

But to the extent you want to go to museums or dense tourist attractions, I wouldn't feel optimistic about anything until Fall to be honest

My neighbor think his family is going to Disney World at the end of May. It's not happening. Plenty of businesses will be back up and running but I think places where mass gatherings occur will still be shut down. Theme parks, arenas, stadiums, large resorts, etc.

I have a road trip planned. Drive to Denver to see my old man then head to Capitol Reef>Bryce>Zion the week after you.

Probably cancelling which sucks.

Back to normal? 2021

As far as driving to a beach town, I think this summer. We are going to hit a point in a couple of weeks where people realize not everyone is going to die, they need to work, and we need to get over fearing this thing. Hopefully that happens in April. But yeah as said I think large gatherings and what not will not be back to normal for 6 months or more.

I work in the outdoor industry and am involved in alot of the planning decisions so here are my thoughts. While everyone agrees they don't really know when the peak is going to be most of the outdoor industry is sticking with the prediction that the peak will be in May. Therefore they are looking for bring staff onsite to self quarantine/training in early to mid June with a July 1 start date.

Booked flights and hotel to NYC for first week of June right before this started taking off. I'm going to cancel but waiting for the window to open up so that I get refunds. Jet Blue has already changed my itinerary based on flights available.

I want no part of NYC for the near future and the people I was going there to see won't be there anymore later in the year. Just hoping I get all the money back.

Anyone who gives a timeline is guessing. No one can say because there are too many variables.

I'll be very surprised if Florida opens the beaches this summer.

Wut, what in the world would lead you to believe beaches will be closed for the next 5 months? Bay county (Panama City) is planning on April 9 and Alabama April 5th. I'll be surprised if those happen, but I can see sometime in April if everything stays as is.

Heck some beaches are still open. Brevard County (Cocoa Beach, Melbourne) beaches are open. They've closed the county parking lots but if you're staying at a hotel/vacation rental that's not a concern. Volusia County (Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach) beaches are still open.

Beach areas will be some of the first areas to open back up. Sure they don't want a repeat of Spring Break and you could still see social distancing guidelines but unless this thing starts killing by the thousands every week and bodies are piling up in the streets there's no way the Florida beaches are closed this summer.

There is a lot of sentiment from the locals to keep outsiders from bringing the virus here. We have very few cases, almost none really. And yes, that hurts people who make money from tourists. But the majority of people don't.

quote:

"Franklin County Sheriff A.J. Smith said he is asking the County Commission to enact a curfew.

He said the health department that covers both Gulf and Franklin counties has been getting phone calls about people from out of state coming to vacation in the small coastal community, one of 15 counties in Florida without a confirmed case of the virus.

“We still have a lot of people coming to the county from out of town,” Smith said. “We want to put it out there: Do not come here.”

Several arrests were made over the weekend, he added, and the ban extends to any stretch of sand along a body of water.

“We put a mandate out ... for zero tolerance," Smith said, saying he told his deputies, " 'If you catch somebody on the beach arrest them.' And if we catch them there, there’s no warning.”

We have a long way to go before the numbers in the US are low enough that Florida will open the beaches. Aside from local sentiment it's a great way for people to spread the virus all over the country. If people would actually distance themselves the beaches would open sooner. There are enough idiots to keep that from being realistic.

I think you can pick your favorite state and work your way forward. This is the projected PEAK of required resources for the corona, so it obviously tapers down HOPEFULLY. If so, I'd say 2 or 3 months after that you "might" start driving for fun.

Yes and the "locals" are being idiots. First off, many are retirees and in the Destin area for example guess who got Covid first and why? It was "locals" that traveled elsewhere on vacation. 2ndly, tons of people have second homes in FL. Is the state just not going to allow them to visit? Or what about those that live in Florida and travel elsewhere?

Secondly, the state relies incredibly on Tourism. Easily the #1 GDP. Its technically only around 11% but that's direct dollars and doesn't include real estate, construction, etc that all work due to tourism. Tourism drives everything here. People are going to have to understand you live by the sword and die by the sword.

You quoted Franklin and Gulf counties, so what do you think kind of business do they have there that doesn't thrive off of Tourism and vacation homes? Logging? Come on.

I'm a resident, you don't need to lecture me on something I know better than you do.

Florida just got a 30 day state wide stay at home order. The cases are still rising nation wide.

Good luck with your beach vacation.
