Are servers and bartenders in NYC now receiving at least $15 an hour salary?

If they are, I guess tipping is now like in Europe there. i.e.,you don’t.

They were expensive before, they’ll still be expensive now. But if you go to the right places, it’s money well spent.

I know they’ll be expensive, but the question at hand is, “does this effect tipping in some way or are servers still getting $2.13 an hour and thus depend on tips for income?”

They make much more, just like the good folks in WA and OR and my tipping is being reigned in.

They wanted more money. They got it and I'm now paying more for my Mac and cheese with ketchup so I have less for them.

Thank you. I will adjust my tipping accordingly.

They live in a high cost of living area. Your tips should not be affected by minimum wage.

Are they forced to stay?

No, just like servers in most major cities aren’t forced to stay. But major cities tend to have lots of restaurants, and in order to have restaurants you have to have people cooking and serving the food.

Breaking news.

Staying in a high priced city is a choice.

If I were relying on min wage in such a city I wouldn't be there.

And if everyone thought the exact way you do, major cities would lack the labor to continue to thrive. There will always be jobs that are necessary for a city to continue to grow that don’t pay well.

Especially if they're able to kill off the labor at the last second in the womb. Clearly people don't always make smart choices.

Don't be dramatic.

Eta....just realized this is the travel board. Was the thread moved or am I just that high?

PoliTalk has a similar thread on the $15 min wage, but I decided to ask my question on here to just get a straight answer without things getting overly political.

Daniel Meyer who owns the very high end Union Square Cafe and Gramercy Tavern Restaurants in NYC eliminated tipping in his restaurants a year or so ago. His reasoning was that he wanted to balance out the compensation between front and back of the house. I read not long ago it’s not working out like he hoped but I’m not sure if he ditched the plan. He basically just raised the prices 25% and paid the staff that way.
I’m familiar with the cost of living in the area but working at a place like those had to be pretty lucrative. In many places F&B people aren’t college kids working 25 hours a week trying to make a few bucks.
Restaurants where I live now all but ensure the staff gets paid well because it’s an expensive place to live and quality labor is hard to find.
