Edit thread -St Marks Hotel is out!!!
I decided to edit this thread instead of starting a new one.

I originally was asking for hotel recs in Manhattan that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. Hotels don't impress me, I'd rather spend the money on something to do.

That being said, I found St Marks Hotel. It's in the village and is $150 a night with taxes (cash only). The photos look awesome.

Is this a good place or am I staying in the same place Tom Hanks stayed in "Big"?

Novotel is where I’ve stayed. Loved it

Serious question: why?

Look at Yotel. It’s a weird chain but the rooms are nice and sometimes they have good deals.

On another note, is this the 6th thread you’ve started about the same trip?

I stayed at the Kimpton Muse several years ago. Wasn't very expensive. They have wine and beer in the lobby in the evening. I like the Kimpton chain generally. Join their loyalty program and you get a $15 mini bar credit.

Yeah, it's got mixed reviews. It has 4 stars on TripAdvisor.

Most of the complaints were all the same, cash only, small rooms, rude employees. Everyone said the location is great. There are a lot of reviews that say the staff is good.

I googled the hotel, other than the location it seems pretty sketchy. I personally wouldn’t stay there but you could probably do worse.

The cash only part would scare me. The area isn’t bad but it isn’t exactly nice. Please Don’t Tell is a popular bar. 10 below ice cream is great.

I’ve stayed at st marks and unless they’ve spent a ton of money renovating (which I doubt), it’s a complete shithole.

When is the trip?

ETA: St Marks looks like a dump if we're looking at the same place.

I am staying for one day, two nights. I don't want to drop $500+ for two nights to tour manhattan for 36 hours.

You think it's a no?

I also have a reservation at the Doubletree in financial district. It $169 more than St Marks ($300 vs $469)

Dates? If you don’t care about amenities much, you’ll get better rates at a midtown chain hotel (doubletree, Hilton Garden Inn, etc.)

St marks location is much better than the financial district, in terms of having fun things to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel, especially on the weekend.

June 14th - 16th.

The Doubletree rate above is the best rate I could find. Remember, I have an over night layover on NYC from my return trip of Italy. I just decided to make it a two night layover and do some site-seeing. So that's why I don't want to fro a ton of money in NYC.

It helps to have the dates and yeah it doesn't look like there is a ton available. That being said, a couple of words of advice.

Don't book anything you can't cancel. It's 6 months out and rates and sales will come and go and you want to be able to capitalize on those.

Second, don't overlook some of the hotels down in the financial area. There is still a ton of stuff you will prob do down that way (Wall St., WTC Memorial, Ellis Island, Battery Park, Brooklyn Bridge, close proximity to SoHo, Chinatown, Little Italy, etc.) and it is incredibly easy to jump on a subway and be anywhere in Manhattan within 15-20 minutes.

3rd, there are plenty of ways to waste money in NYC that doesn't include staying in the cheapest hotel. I would recommend staying somewhere a little nicer and making a few tweaks to your trip elsewhere to save that cash but you still get a great experience (i.e., subway and walking vs taxi, research and plan meals and bars to not waste money on mediocre experiences, look into doing things that are discounted or free. Ex. Moma has free admissions on certain days during the year.)

Closer to your trip I am happy to give you a list of bars and restaurants I would recommend that are great but won't cost you a ton of money.

Won't be doing bars, I have my 14 yo daughter with me.

The lady at Doubletree said to check in every once in a while to check rate changes. Now, I used my corporate rate discount, and that was $40 a night cheaper than my Hilton Honors rate.

I do want to do a photo shot of Brooklyn Bridge at sunset, and the WTC. I could stay in Queens near the airport for about $175 a night, but cabs would be $50 a trip.

Try searching the Starwood website, I’m seeing a bunch of SPG hotels on those dates sub $250. W on Lexington is $208.
